Is our rooster making our hens suffer?

We have a rooster mating with five hens. He is much larger than them. His spurs have caused feather damage to the backs of a couple of his favorite hens, to the point where we bought chicken saddles for them. After even more time, he has caused the removal of feathers around the sides and backs...

    Missing egg mystery

We have five hens and a rooster. We very rarely ever collect five eggs in one day. Mostly we get two, three, or four eggs. We usually let the chickens out of the coop for a couple hours before sunset. They return to roost every evening. A couple months ago, I marked three eggs and left them in...

What is causing this back feather damage?

We have five hens and one rooster. One hen in particular, a buff orpington, is having damaged feathers on her back and wings. The others, including one other buff orpington, don't have any of this. So I'm thinking it is not from breeding. Do you think it's breeding or something else? She is the...

    Goodbye, Holly.

We lost our pride and joy chick, Holly, a starlight green egger, last week. Not unlike most days, we let them out of the coop to free range for a few hours before sunset. However, instead of being around, this time we ran some errands. And she was gone when we returned. Our rooster seemed to be...

    Making wet mash

When one makes wet mash by wetting their starter feed for a treat, is there any powdered spices you can include or should avoid with 1-week olds? I first thought of adding black pepper, but I don't know if that would be suitable or palatable.

    It's good to be here

My name is Tim, aka Melancholy Bear. We live in ETN and are new to chickens and homesteading. We're making a go. I built a coop from reclaimed wood recently. We bought our six chicks yesterday. The breeds are 2 buff orpington, 2 sapphire gems, 1 rhode island red, and 1 some-type of green egger...

    New to pasty butt

We got six chicks yesterday. One seems to have poo crusting on her back side but not blocking her vent. I got some off with a warm wet rag, but some still remains. Should any crusting be addressed, or is it generally best to leave it if not causing any blockage?
