Thanks for checking in! I've been wanting to take a minute and tell the story of "Little Guy." He came to us as an extra chick in our order. He had a gullet outside his body and it had exploded. He was a special chick to me and I asked on this site for help and the community responded! Here...
I found this very odd chicken poop in the barn. I've never seen anything like it. I thought it might be a worm but it didn't move when I touched it with a stick. It was malleable but didn't seem alive or once living. Does anyone have any ideas? Do I have a problem with my flock? I have 9...
Update- I blocked the nesting boxes and one of the 4 roosted with the old hens. Success ! Hopefully the rest will follow her example. Thanks for the help.
They were using the roosts in their other coop. The roosts were bamboo poles and fit their small feet. The new roosts are 2x4s. I can try and put up some bamboo poles for them to transition to the bigger roosts. I don't see a lot of older hens picking on the younger ones, but I don't see...
Thanks for your help. They have been in the larger coop for about a month, maybe a bit longer. I can try to block off the nesting boxes and see about another roost.
I have 6 elderly chickens and recently added 3 new hens and a roo. They are almost 5 months old. The new hens and roo were in a smaller, adjoining coop and run for a month before moving in. My problem is that the new birds won't roost with the other hens and roost in the laying boxes. The...
We made this video from taking 1 photo every minute while building our coop. We fast forwarded and put it to music. It took about 2 weekends and the video is 4 minutes.
The photo is of our 2 coops. They share a fence so new & young chickens can get use to each other before they are housed...
Thank you for your help! I'm glad I will be able to keep one and I read that the Brahmas are good layers through the winter. She will be a nice addition to my laying flock :)
I purchased 15 large breed male day old chicks for meat. I'm wondering if this one is a hen or rooster? I think it is a Brahmas. The others have a larger and redder comb. If it is a hen I am considering keeping her for eggs.
After reading about impacted crop I massaged the lump. It went down and seemed to kind of explode overnight. I put antibiotic cream on it and separated him from the other chicks. I noticed they were pecking his wound through the fencing so we added fencing. I then noticed him pecking his own...
I saw him drink yesterday but haven't actually seen him eat. His food seems to be going down in his section of the brooder so I assume he is eating. Is there anything I can do if the crop is impacted?
Chick is ok today. No better and maybe a little more swollen. He's able to move around ok. I had to isolate him because I noticed other chicks pecking him a little.
It's moving around the brooder. All of them seem to be eating and drinking but I haven't specifically seen the injured one eating and drinking. I'll watch for awhile. I'm a little nervous about opening up the abcess. I was hoping it would come to a head and pop open on its own and then I...
I'm not sure how it happened. I picked up the chicks from the post office yesterday morning. I got them set up in their brooder but didn't check each chick carefully, just wanted them to get under the light and to start eating and drinking. When I checked each chick this am I noticed it. I...
I just received 15 chicks in the mail yesterday. They were active, eating & drinking after they arrived and got settled. When I was checking each chick this am for pasting I noticed one has an injury with a swollen area. It is swollen I've attached a photo. They are on pine shavings. Does...
