Rhode island red vs isa hen egg color?

Last year I got Rhode Island reds and accidentally got an ISA brown. Is there a way to distinguish the eggs so I don't hatch out a Rhode island red x isa brown? I noticed two egg colors, any clue if one might be isa brown and the other Rhode island red?

Does temperature or season affect egg fertility?

I'm trying to make plans for hatching some Cayuga and silver appleyard duck eggs this spring. I'm getting ready to separate the breeds into separate pens so I don't have a bunch of hybrids. I'm wondering if it matters how early I collect the hatching eggs. Does the temperature or season affect...

Blow torch on ducks small pin feathers?

I'm processing some ducks and didn't do the waxing method like I had in the past. Is it true that I can take a blow torch to the skin and it will burn all the tiny pin feathers. My birds have a lot of small tiny feather under the skin only slightly poking out.

Inexpensive ways to raise protein level in feed?

The local feed and farm stores nearby are lousy. And I noticed feed price at the stores are going up. There's a place that has feed with good quality ingredients with 16.5% protein but I need something with around 20%. A 50lb bags cost $20 any idea what I could add to boost it and how to...

Muscovy ducks plucking each other's wings?

I just noticed an issue with my young Muscovies plucking each other's wings. They'll reach out and grab another birds wing and yank the feathers out in the process. A few were bleeding. 😬. What should I do about this and why are they doing this. I've never had this issue before?

    Silver appleyard genetics? Breed standard?

I have three silver appleyard drakes and I'm trying to pick which ones I'm going to sell or cull. I've noticed that each one has a different amount of brown on its back. One of them is all silver on its back, one is partially brown and partially silver, and one has a complete brown pattern on...

Barred vs rippled in Muscovy ducks?

I was given 20 free Muscovies a few weeks ago and didn't know that barred and rippled Muscovies existed until this year. I always had the black and white pied color. It turns out that 5 of the new ones are either barred or rippled, but I'm not exactly sure about the difference. I haven't...

    Duck egg color variations?

Chickens seem to have a huge variety of egg colors. Are the only colors that ducks produce, black, grey, white, and green? Why does it seem like chickens have all these different shades of colors, but ducks only have a few?

Another duck found dead in the coop! Neck feathers wet?

Yesterday I went to let my ducks inside and found another duck dead in the coop. Its neck feathers were wet and nothing was even eaten. I still have no clue what would have done it. The coop is fenced in so It couldn't have been a dog. I've had a ton of rat snakes recently would it do...

What do you do to get new ducks to integrate into the flock?

I introduced 9 new ducks to my flock recently and they just do not get along with the kahki campbells. They sort of stay off in their own groups and when they do get near each other they don't get along. Will they ever get along or will they sort of keep together in their own groups? The...

What are some methods you use for lowering feed cost? Catching crawdads for duck feed?

I'm curious what everyone here does to lower the cost of feed. I have a creek out back and I'm considering buying some minnow and crawdad traps so I can supplement their feed. I'm also considering setting up a black soldier fly larvae bin. Also any clue how to make sure they get a balanced...

Does anyone have a clue if these silver appleyards are male or females?

I've been trying to figure this out for a few weeks. Do you think based on the call that they're making that they might be all males or is this their juvenile sound still? At first, based on the feather pattern, which will probably be difficult to see in the video because they're wet, I was...

Have any of you ever had khaki Campbell x Muscovy crosses? How common is it? What did they look like?

How common is it for Muscovies and Mallard-derived breeds to cross? Is it less likely to happen if there is a muscovy drake around? I did not separate my muscovy duck from the khaki Campbell drake, I don't think the drake would have bred her because for whatever reason the Muscovies sort of...
