Pros: Great layers, adapt well, beautiful birds
Cons: None!
Probably the prettiest chickens I've ever seen! We got them from a neighbor as adults so we didn't get to take them much, but they adapted well and quickly got to the point of handfeeding. They are great layers and a breed I would love to get again someday!
Pros: Have used these waterers for years with chicks. Good with broodies too.
Cons: Not so good with older chickens as it tends to get knocked over, but chicks and broodies do fine with it in my experience. But I ignore that because it's meant for chicks, not adults.
If you use these, you can replace the plastic with a glass jar of you want, but glass jars are heard to clean and algee grows on glass.

With chicks only a couple days old, especially bantams, I put marbles in their water to prevent drowning.

Pros: Easy to handle, fairly tame, pretty good layer, eggs huge for the size of the hen.
Cons: -Rooster is unpredictable and aggresive.
-Hen often hides eggs.
Great bird for fair showmanship because they are small and easy to handle. They don't need to be worked with much either.

Rooster is forever working against me. No matter how much or well I work with him he still gets in spurts where he will attack me. But apparently this is normal for OEGB roosters, it is in their blood to "protect" the hens.

Pros: Great layers of beautiful eggs, beautiful, friendly and make great pets.
Cons: Often confused with Ameraucanas or "Americanas", but that's not really their fault.
I bought mine at a store as "Americanas". I later found out that they were Easter Eggers, but I have no inclination to get rid of them for not being a recognized breed. They are friendly and make me laugh a lot. The eggs I get are different shades of green and blue, more beautiful than the sky. I love my EEs, everybody should have some.

Pros: Good layers.
Cons: Not at all friendly, flighty, extremely aggressive to other chickens.
They are good layers but not good pets. Very flighty and shy. Mine wouldn't stop picking on each other. They had a very strict pecking order and sometimes killed each other because of it.

Pros: Amazing layers, friendly, cheap and can be found at just about any store.
Cons: None that I can think of.
One of my favorite breeds! They are beautiful and friendly, and some of the best layers I've ever owned. They are common enough that you can find them at almost all stores that sell chicks. Everybody should have Rhode Island Reds.
Purchase Price
$2.00 (for young chicks)

Barred Rock

Pros: 1. Great layers
2. Very friendly
3. Beautiful hens and handsome roosters
Cons: They are very common, and if you take them to fair you will have several competitors.
They're in my top three favorite breeds. Very friendly even if you don't work with them much. They are very beautiful, and the rooster's plumage is very dazzling.

You can sex this breed as day old chicks by just looking at their down color and feet, which is rather uncommon but very useful.

The are a very good beginner's breed, but even advanced chicken keepers sometimes keep a couple. I always like to have at least one Barred Rock in my flock.

I highly recommend this breed to both beginner and advanced chicken keepers who are looking for good layers or friendly pet chickens.

Silkie

Updated
Pros: 1. Very fluffy and fun to cuddle
2. Very friendly and sweet
3. Great winter layers
4. Great danger alarms
5. I have heard from just about every silkie owner around that they are great mothers, but I have not yet had one go broody myself
Cons: 1. They can't fly very well, I once had a cockerel hurt his leg, probably by falling and not being able to catch himself, it wasn't his fault, it's just the way their feathers are (and it doesn't really matter to me, I just thought I'd put that in)
I love my silkies, they are in my top three favorite breeds. Mine are actually very good layers so far, each of my three pullets average about 5 eggs a week, and they are very new layers too! They started in the middle of winter 2019, so I don't know how they do in spring and summer yet.

Mine are very mellow and go-with-the-flow, even though I haven't worked with them much at all.

My silkie roosters give the alarms all the time, even for little songbirds that fly overhead. I have only heard my game bantam rooster give the alarm a couple of times, while my silkies give it several times per hour.

I got silkies to raise chicks for me, though they haven't done it yet because I haven't let them. No broodies yet, but hopefully there will be soon!

I think everybody should get silkies, they are a great breed!
