Aseel

Pros: game, very tame around humans, natural hatching ability, intelligent, hardy, a rare and ancient breed
Cons: game, you can never keep very many together, they don't lay an abundance of eggs

if you noticed that i used the word 'game' for pro and con, i have my reasons. the asil or aseel was imported from the middle east and india because their gameness was used for fighting and grading into american and english games. cockfighting is illegal now and there is not much demand for game chickens that don't lay very many eggs. that being said they are a worthy breed to keep and more breeders should keep a pair or so on their place. i am using them for a grading project with my cubalayas and also using thai gamefowl.

Pros: tame, beautiful, surprisingly good layers, tasty meat
Cons: some strains have become small over the years
we got some of these from sandhill preservation and liked them so much that we started breeding them. they were easy to 'breed up' but their were some things they still lacked. so, we looked for breeders who had different strains of cubalaya. we got some brown red hens and a gold duckwing cock from gallorojo. we added some blacks from saladin. in the past we bred for size and type. now we are breeding for size , type, tameness, color, and multiple spurs. if you let them free range they will forage very good. they lay a good amount of medium sized eggs. their meat is very tasty. they are hardy, vigorous, and healthy. they look good in your yard.

Australorp

Pros: docile, good layers, hardy
Cons: too common?
i took 2 roosters in for a trade and thought they were jersey giants. they turned out to be australorps so i went and got a few hens from different sources. i can't really fault this breed. even the hatchery australorps are pretty good. breeders adding orpington into the breed for size are winning in the shows. this bird should be good layers and smaller than orpingtons.

Pros: colorful eggs, multi colored birds
Cons: gamey tasting meat, dont care for the eggs
we bought some blue hatching eggs and were told they were ameraucana. they were all mixed colored non standard but had slate legs and not green. some of the roosters were downright crazy but a few were tame. would not have them again.
