Pros: Great list of breeds, beautiful paintings of each breed.
Cons: Not very much information on how to take care of chickens.
This a perfect book for picking out your first chickens or expanding your flock. It has beautiful paintings of many different chicken breeds. It also has great descriptions of the breeds. The only downside to this book is that it's called, The Illustrated Guide to Chickens: How to Choose Them, How to Keep Them, but it only briefly goes though how to keep them. It's more about the different chicken breeds than how to care for them.
Pros: Very informative, easy to understand, great pictures, crafts and recipes in the back of the book.
Cons: None.
This is my number 1 go to chicken guide! It has information on all sorts of aspects of getting chickens including: what to consider before you get chickens, choosing the breed, housing & cleaning, feeding, all about eggs, heath and care, and more! All the information is easy to understand and accompanied by great color photos. There's even crafts with eggs and feathers, and egg recipes at the end of the book! I recommend this book 100%!
Pros: My chickens LOVE them, easy to store and feed, great source of protein.
Cons: Pricey for such a little bag, now my chickens expect to get these every time I give them treats.
I bought these last Christmas for my chickens. They go absolutely crazy about them. I just wish they were a little cheaper for such a small bag. It's nice how they are easier and less messy than live mealworms but my chickens still like them. My flock will be receiving these for Christmas again this year. :cd
Pros: Sweet, good layers, calm, good foragers, beautiful.
Cons: Sometimes aggressive with more delicate breeds, sometimes bossy, sometimes very loud.
I have three Rhode Island Reds and I love them. They are sweet, calm, beautiful birds. They lay very well, usually giving me a egg every or every other day. They are also great foragers, often seaching for bugs and rooting around in the grass while my White Rocks sunbathe and be lazy. RIRs have gotten a bad reputation for being mean to people and other birds. My RIRs have NEVER been mean to me and I only had a issue once with one of them being a bully to one of my White Rocks and they all get along now. They can be bossy to the other hens sometimes as well. If they want they can also be VERY loud, 2 of my RIRs are extremely loud sometimes, so they may not be the best if you live in town. But all things consitered, RIRs are my favorite breed and I recommended them 100%.
