Ameraucana

The Ameraucana was developed in the 70's by a few people who were trying to standardize the...
Pros: Don't scare easily
Cons: None
I have a pullet and a cockerel, both are under 6 months. But my pullet got chased around by a dog and hid. When I found her, she let me pick her up and let me put her back in her coop (where she had escaped). She has always been friendly to me and let me pick her up and doesn't run away. The cockerel is very similar. He seems to get slightly defensive though, but only with his tone of voice, so far.
Pros: Very fluffy, tame, easy to catch and pick up
Cons: They don't lay many eggs
So cute!
Pros: Not aggressive, snuggly, pretty, cold and heat tolerant, predators tend to leave them alone.
Cons: FLIES like crazy, loves to roost in trees, and is nearly impossible to get out of said trees.
I've got two amerucana pullets, named Cleo and Theo. They're nice sweet birds, huge and fluffy. However, they frequently fly up trees or onto roofs and have to be rescued. I plan on buying or breeding more soon.

Pros: Green or Blue Eggs, Beautiful Birds
Cons: Skittish
I got my 3 girls almost 2 years ago at a poultry auction. They are a dusty, bluish shade. They are fairly skittish and don't like to be petted, but I never really worked with them (I'm contrasting this with my new Black Sex Links that surprised the heck out of me by trying to perch on me or eat my toes and I didn't work with them, either). I love the egg color. They started laying at the end of last year and took a winter break (I'm in Kansas) and got back to it this spring, but one started going broody. She goes right back to it within a week of being separated from the nesting area. They had no problem with our winter last year and are coping with our summers, but they pant much more than my new Black Sex Links do. If my Black Sex Links turn out to be much better layers (which they reportedly should), I probably won't get any more Ameraucanas until I get my dream farm and can have all chickens I want.

Pros: Cute, Nice, Social, and Beautiful!
Cons: I got nothing!

I have 3 of these amazing birds, and I definitely will get more next time.

Here is my AMAZING rooster:
Pros: Great egg layers, Very friendly, Quiet, Large eggs, Easy to care for, Colorful eggs
Some of my favorite hens have been Ameraucana's! I love the colorful eggs, and even when I cross bred my hen with other roosters, the 2nd gen ameraucana's still layed green, large eggs! They are a great beginner's bird because of all their positive aspects! I hope this encourages some of you to get ameraucana's, I recommend them 10/10!!!!

Pros: Variety of egg color and looks and OK free rangers
Cons: Roosters are aggressive , hens are skittish and aren't very good layers
Ive had amerucanas since i was 2 years old and they are by far not my favorite.
Every last rooster out of this breed ive had has been extremely agressive towards me and my family,
Hens are skittish and are not very good layers but do lay a variety of colors such as blue green pink tan and brown.
They overall not a vwery good breed and i dont recomend buying them

Pros: Able to be Tamed, Cute, Beautiful Eggs
Cons: Flighty at First
We got out first ameraucana, Penguino, last June. She was very friendly as a chick, but as she got older, she became very flighty and scared of humans. When we moved her to a coop closer to our house, I began to spend more time with her, and she became very tame. She even flies on my arm for scratch!
Pros: Good layers blue eggs, docile, variety of beautiful different colors
Cons: Get picked on by other hens & weird personalities
I WAS SO EXCITED TO GET MY TRUE BLUE AMERAUCANAS. THEY SENT ME A GREY(blue) AND A BLACK SPOTTED ONE (black had iridescent colors in it).. MY ONLY REGRET IS NOT WAITING TO PUT THEM WITH MY OLDER HENS, WITH A BIGGER PEN. AND ONE AMERAUCANA WOULD STICK HER HEAD THROUGH FENCE SO THE OTHER HENS WOULD TAKE TURNS PECKING HER, VERY WEIRD. THEY WERE ON THE LOWEST END OF THE PECKING ORDER, I DID NOT REALIZE THEY WERE NOT EATING ENOUGH, SO THEY STARTED A BAD HABIT OF FEATHER PECKING FOR THEIR SOURCE OF FOOD, AND TAUGHT THE REST OF THE GROUP TO DO THE SAME. :( I REALIZED THEY WERE GETTING THIN, SO I PULLED THEM OUT OF THE GROUP, ONE CAME OUT OF IT, THE OTHER ONE DID NOT MAKE IT. I WAS DEVASTATED, THE POOR THING CONTINUED TO LAY EGGS NO MATTER HER CONDITION, LOYAL LAYER TIL THE END. :( I AM NEW TO CHICKENS, AND I MADE ALOT OF MISTAKES, THE CONS WERE CAUSED BY ME IM SURE. THEY WERE MY MOST EXPENSIVE HEN, BUT THEY WERE VERY BEAUTIFUL AND IM SURE THEY WOULD BE SHOW QUALITY FOR 4-H. WOULD RECOMMEND FOR THAT. I WILL GET MORE SOME DAY.
BOUGHT THEM THROUGH MY PET CHICKEN

Pros: friendly, calm, pretty feathers, smart, lay XL eggs
Cons: Some love to fly over my fence
I love this breed! Americans are great layers of blueish green eggs which are XL in size and they are oh so friendly although they aren't the friendlyist breed i have. 2 of my Americanas love to fly over my fence which is fine for me since they free range during the day. They also seem to not like rain very much which is kind of funny to watch them run from the rain. They also have beautiful feather patterns of light brown yellow and black feathers. When I first got my Americanas it said on the cage that they where in Americana/EE pullets so I just call them Americana since the 2 breeds are similar. This breed is cold hearty and can also handle the heat which is pretty good for people who live in the south and cold places. This breed also is usually high on the pecking order:rolleyes:
Anyways I just love this breed... such friendly hens!
Pros: Beautiful, docile, colored eggs, loves people and other chickens.
Cons: None
My Ameraucana is such a sweet bird. She is fully white with sort of bluish legs. She likes all the other birds and does not fight for dominance. She has a distinctive alert call to the other birds when there is dog or cat near by, or when people come into the garden. This makes her such an awesome addition to our flock because she is so aware of her surroundings. She is a gentle bird. She can be held and will even fall asleep perched on your arm or just sitting while you pet her. I did not spend a lot for this bird because I got her from a local seller who gave me a discount when I bought other birds at the same time. Her eggs are the prettiest blue color. I really could not beleive my eyes when I saw the first one. She lays two or three times per week.

Pros: Usually good temperament, beautiful eggs, fluffy beards:)
Cons: Roo's are usually fiesty.

Ameraucana's are great! They lay beautiful eggs, they come in all different colors, and they have fluffy beards(which I LOVE!) The chicken above was my previous rooster, Bilbo, the Splash Ameraucana(he was young in this photo) He was a gentlemen to his hens and protected them. The only reason I got rid of him was because he occasionally attacked me and other members of my family. Over all, my Ameraucana's temperaments were 9 out 0f 10! I love Ameraucanas and encourage everyone to give them a try!
Pros: The personality and optimism in her daily routines is entertaining and she looks forward to learning new things. Very brave
Cons: Doesn't back down when she is miffy. Someone gets pecked pretty hard and she doesn't say sorry
If you only want one or a few sturdy birdies for fun pets for your family, this seems like an easy breed.
Pros: Nice to look at, those blue eggs, takes confinement well
Cons: Aggressive with other birds not too friendly, lazy, noisy, may not be suited for hot climate
Hatched some wheaten/blue wheaten eggs from a breeder. The chicks were initially pretty friendly and stayed that way until they went outside. Even though I spent a lot of time with them inside AND outside, they disassociated with me and now I can't even reach down to pet them without them running off. I have two now and instead of a nice cluck both of them screech. It's quite irritating.

I would have keep both of them but one has come after me on one than more occasion and she isn't even 4 mo old. She is extremely bossy with the other birds and beats the girls up who are younger than her without reason and pulls out their tail feathers. I can hear them squeal when she pecks hard on them. She refuses to scratch for food but instead steals the food from others. A chicken in my flock has to earn her keep and this one , if I hadn't found her a home, would be heading for the stew pot.

I really like the look of these birds. I may and try and hatch from a different line in hopes I get some of what others talk about that seemed to have passed me by.

Pros: love the green feet
I like this breed. Light blue eggs and I hope mine is female. I incubated this one. Seems very lovable.
Pros: Beards, blue eggs, big personalities
Cons: Sneaky garden raiders
I got my first Ameraucana as a 'factory rescue' bird. She's now at *least* 5 years old and still lays every single day all year long. I since added 4 other Ameraucanas to the flock and love them all! They don't like to be 'held' or restrained, but are happy to hitch a ride on my shoulder or head as I go about my business. Plus I enjoy complimenting my girls on how beautiful their beards are! They lay faithfully, cackle and sing hilariously afterwards, are small and able-bodied (good flight = good predator evasion!), and come in so many beautiful colors!

My only beef is that they're super sneaky and like to hop the fence into the garden when they think I'm not looking! They just can't leave it alone like the others! lol!
Pros: beautiful birds,friendly,pretty eggs
Cons: none
I have 4 Ameraucanas. I just love them!!!

Pros: Lovely eggs and fairly calm breed and I love the muff
Cons: Doesn't lay well over the winter
If you aren't going to get your eggs from the grocery store then why have eggs that look like they did. I love my rainbow carton of eggs and can not understand why the regular grocery store eggs don't come in more colors. What kid isn't going to ask for the pack of eggs that are green. My daughter and I love the eggs and the people who buy eggs from my daughter also love the variety of colors. Our Ameraucana has always been a sweet bird that comes up for treats and get along well with the other breeds. I would highly recommend this breed.
Pros: very pretty, good white egg layers, and i love the little tuffs on there heads!
Cons: flighty
i love this breed!

they r so sweet, if you can catch them. they r very flighty, u have to earn there trust, which is kind of hard. but over all, I LOVE THIS BREED!!!
