I have an 8 week old Welsummer chick that doesn't act like the rest of my chickens. I also have two other 8 weekers and four 14 weekers. When I let them out of their coop, the others are so excited, foraging, and running around the yard. She does this for a few minutes but...
I have no idea if this will work, but I've heard that human urine around the coop/run area helps keep predators away. You can also buy dried coyote urine online. Worth a shot!
They are naturally weaning themselves off the heater, which is super great! Just like they would with mama hen. You're doing a great job.
Also, lots of folks watch their chicks though a camera, so I don't think you're crazy at all!
I also have an update. My little ones are thriving with having an "escape room" they can go back to in order to avoid being picked on. They are slowly venturing out and even had some supervised free range time. I'm happy to see them able to move around more and stay safe.
I was just talking to my husband about this last night! Ideally, we would have two coops, one for large breeds and one for bantams. He loves the bantam Siebrights (sp?) look and I prefer the large breeds. We would have 50 in one coop and 50 in the other. I do love Cochins though and their fluff...
