Can chickens actually taste what they are eating?

With the way mine go crazy over blueberries, I think they do have tastebuds!

    "Depressed" Chicken?

Hey chicken family! I have an 8 week old Welsummer chick that doesn't act like the rest of my chickens. I also have two other 8 weekers and four 14 weekers. When I let them out of their coop, the others are so excited, foraging, and running around the yard. She does this for a few minutes but...

Probable Red Fox Den Very Close to My Barn

Make sure to check laws on relocation. Sometimes you are not allowed to relocate a trapped animal.

Probable Red Fox Den Very Close to My Barn

I have no idea if this will work, but I've heard that human urine around the coop/run area helps keep predators away. You can also buy dried coyote urine online. Worth a shot!

    Heating plate concerns

They are naturally weaning themselves off the heater, which is super great! Just like they would with mama hen. You're doing a great job. Also, lots of folks watch their chicks though a camera, so I don't think you're crazy at all!

What is Your DREAM Flock? (And What's Realistic?)

I was just talking to my husband about this last night! Ideally, we would have two coops, one for large breeds and one for bantams. He loves the bantam Siebrights (sp?) look and I prefer the large breeds. We would have 50 in one coop and 50 in the other. I do love Cochins though and their fluff...

Right now they are all in the coop together at night and during the day and free range when we are at home. We are in the PNW and it just stopped raining/flooding so we can begin building the run. I probably didn't execute the best timing for the integration since this is my first time having...

I know this is an older thread, but I'm hoping to re-liven it since this exact scenario is happening to me. I have a Houdini chicken getting over her barrier to where the older chickens are. They pecked her pretty good and her comb got injured last night because she couldn't get to safety. My...
