Bielefelder and Black Jersey Giant roos in Illinois

Hello, I have about 2-3 of each bielefelder and bjg cockerels at 19 1/2 weeks that I would rehome in the area of northern to central IL. Located almost 1/2 hour south of Joliet and 1/2 hour west of Kankakee, near Braidwood. I'm keeping 2 of each and butchering another 2 of each to try the...

    Small-combed Bielefelder Project

Great thread! I'm looking at playing around with my bielefelder & bjg roos over bielefelder, bjg, slw, & dominique hens to try and make something interesting with a rose comb and autosexing.

Specific breed crosses. BJG, Bielefelder, SLW, GLW, Dominique/ barred, NHR, BO

I'm not sure about the wild type. I think that will go to all? For barring it's a solid dominant color roo over a barred hen to get sex links. The biele roo will give one barring copy to each, where pullets only carry one sex link trait and cockerels should be half dominant barred & solid carriers.

Specific breed crosses. BJG, Bielefelder, SLW, GLW, Dominique/ barred, NHR, BO

Does anyone have pictures or experience with any crosses with Bielefelder or Black (black color) Jersey Giant roos over either Biele or BJG hen, Silver Laced Wyandotte hens, Gold Laced Wyandotte hens, Dominique hens, New Hampshire Red hens (RIR, production), or Buff Orpington hens? Australorp...

    Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

It used to be americanas. Maybe they separated their breeding into true ameraucana and EE's. Otherwise they could be sued for false advertising! Not exactly rare, popular, and at leastt one hatchery is selling from the founder's stock. It's like ayam cemani. So many backyard breeders thinking...

    Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

That's true, but cackle sells real ameraucana pullets for $20. Less than half that straight run. Same price as my bielefelder pullets, but I got straight run for $6.50. They're both pretty popular and becoming a lot more common. Pretty soon the only difference on ameraucana will probably be...

    Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

Difference being that they probably are using at least some true ameraucana (not exactly rare), or can use the same mixes to create a parallel line. If it fits and breeds true, it is one. Even if it doesn't breed true it can win shows. There isn't a registry of lineage like some dogs or horses...

    Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

I wonder if a lot of those hatchery americana are actually ameraucana with sloppy breeding, like some slw's having a recessive straight comb instead of rose comb.

    Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

I agree. Silkies, polish, etc have had their original agricultural traits bred away for looks concerning adaptations. Like many show chickens. I find nothing wrong with that, just not my personal preference. .. I just wonder where this world is going with all the craziness anymore. My grandma...

    Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

Sorry, more a novelty than a fad. I enjoy the colored egg pictures, but if we have any more economic or supply problems, it won't be a concern. I'd like to mix a small number of dual purpose to do well in my climate, personally! Some americaunas are supposed to free range well though!

    Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

Personally I just think it's funny. Like the OP said, people get sooo riled up about americanas over americaunas. It's education to a point, but gets snobby on Facebook. Definitely false advertising by some companies. Also a newer bred bird. I don't care either way. Just (usually) less...

    Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

Cackle sells them from the original breeder's/ project manager's stock for $9 straight run. He basically took a bunch of barnyard mixes with araucana, if iirc, to get rid of the lethal gene and a lot of the breeders involved all argued about what standards should be. I saw some of the tsc ones...

New member and pictures of my flock

I knew that I wanted to do dual purpose with good egg laying. All breeds are generally decent winter egg layers for my upper midwest climate, especially wyandottes. Just as an experiment, I'd like to use the Black Giant roos across Dominique and Bielefelder roos across Wyandotte to see what I...

Thanks, guys! I did a whole lot of research here long before I ordered chicks and a lot more while I was waiting for them to hatch. Other than my buddy that farms chickens (my buddy's dad), I have learned mostly from searching this forum! I usually searched for the question and added "backyard...

New member and pictures of my flock

Hello! I'm James in northern Illinois, south of I80 in the small towns, woods, and cornfields. I'm currently raising 41 chicks at nearly 6 weeks and 4 that I'm guessing are almost a week and a half. 14 straight run bielefelders (cackle still sent 7&7 despite autosex), 13 straight run black...
