Roll Out Nest Box Mk3

I started out building a standard cube style nest box and quickly realized that a roll out nest box is a much better solution. You get clean eggs and less chance for a hen to get the urge to eat one. I used pocket screws to build most of this and lined it with a carpet runner. Optionally you could hinge the outside top if the roll out nest box is in a protected area. I've attached drawings of all the parts. I feel that a community nest box is better than individual nest boxes because they can all use the same box without any squabbling about who get to go in. I've seen 4 of my RIR pullets in there at one time peacefully sitting side by side.

I built mine with the top hinged but found it was very hard to seal the gap so now I'm going to build a overhang for the run to protect it from rain, snow and ice.

I built mine to fit through the wall of the run

This shows the curtain under the divider. The chickens are not fooled by the curtain lol.

This broom stick is used to raise the false floor so I can remove it for cleaning.
I clean it about once a week with a brush.

Here you can see the false floor lifted up by the broom stick.

Great idea. I was concerned about switching to non-roll-out if I want hens to go broody, but you've even included that in the design, with the lift-up floor.

I love the idea of the hens being able to share the same next box area.
Excellent job!
A piece of rubber or even an old piece of linoleum would work to keep the hinge joint dry. Just extend it across the top piece of roof, maybe tilt the box outward a touch so rain would run off the roof to the outside.
You sure have some great ideas.
I like it! :thumbsup
Great idea I love it , I want to cut out the dividing walls in my nestboxes now

What did you make the curtains out of?
Some material I found at Hobby Lobby, the red did not last over a year but the black is still going strong. Hmm somewhere I have a photo of the bolt. Can't find it but it is not a woven material.

Click on the drawing and it goes to full size, at least on a PC it does.

The broom stick is just a stick of wood going through a hole in the bottom floor. I could be a square stick with a nail through it to stop if from falling out or anything really that can push the sloping floor up enough for you to grab it and pull it out for cleaning.
