Cornish X: The Quick Meat Bird

Good article, although seemed to be more on opinion than facts.

Well a factual occurrence is what I and my husband personally experienced raising these birds. It’s not an opinion - it actually happened. My opinion is these birds are not a great choice for the first meat flock. The facts are they grow at differing rates, some did not survive it, and they can be culled in 6 weeks.
A good perspective on how they grow. I agree that they are not for everyone, and I would not recommend them to any newbie. These chickens are so outside the “norm” that it shocked me! My husband was so attached to them that we also kept two hens who laid enormous eggs faithfully. They both died within two days of each other in the first heat wave we had. Thank you for a great article.

Thank you for your reply. Sounds like we went through the same thing. Dora the Explorer had what I would say was a stroke and was gone in the morning in the coop with Nora by her side. Nora lasted another month and died in the night probably from a heart attack. They are not meant to keep a long time. They are sweet birds. It is sad, in my opinion.
This didn't really seem like an article, more of just some quick opinions on Cornish X. I think if the author added more detail (for example, more detail on how she raised them and feed schedule, etc., when describing the health issues they had) and maybe made the article's title something like "The Downsides of Choosing Cornish X as Meatbirds", it would fit better.

I still enjoyed reading though.

Glad you enjoyed the article. They were free grazed and outside by 3 weeks old. Feeding schedule was 12 on 12 off. We live in Florida but it was winter here. They had a heat lamp in the brooder and then the coop. There were 25 birds in the flock. I’d have to say now, after raising other meat birds, the Cornish X we received were not a hearty group.
The reason I chose Quick Meat Bird is because they are. Literally in 6 weeks you have a freezer full of birds. Unbelievable but true. But with that fast growth comes, what I and so many others have described as, unfortunate issues.
Good article!

Thank you!
Very well written. Different strains of CX grow at different rates and have different mortality rates.

I didn’t know that. Good to know. We would consider raising them again if we could be sure they were healthy. Mine came from a reputable hatchery so I guess it was the luck of the draw and I was not lucky.
