I feel like I'm parroting many others above by saying, " it seems logical that these bird do *feel* as it's just - well..... If I hadn't seen "x" with my own eyes..... Kinda thinking. Ya-know?"

It's hard to find words right now that do at least equal justice to the theme of this article. The last year has been rather hard on us. One of our oldest rescue fur-kids lived 7+ years(into early summer) with us to approx 13+ years old. Of our 28 chicks, we've lost 3; all for significantly different stages and reasons. The time and effort & love we pure into them all is rewarding; even though it's for a short lifespan.

All very logical suggestions.
The only tidbit I'd add is with digital you can easily afford to take a metric-crap-tonne of pics. Pro's have for decades. You can very easily delete the ones that "don't cut the mustard" so go forth & have fun.

I'm very curious what the odds are of figuring out how much water to pour on it on the 9 & 9 time. Are you keeping track of that as well? Have you experimented with different volumes?

I use between 1/2 and 3/4 bin of water to the fodder tower when I water it twice a day. I have not experimented with different volumes of water, but that is a very interesting question. My goal is to keep the fodder grains moist for good grass growth, but not wet enough to promote mold growth. I don't know how much difference the amount of water would play in the flood and drain system, because I suspect the seeds will absorb what water they need and let the rest pass through. If I had a controlled environment, I would like to see how much difference water and temp affect fodder growth.

I am impressed by the research and testing attempted. They are a high quality effort, even if down played by OP. I would like to eventually agreed with more of this data shared but, given my personal learning curve is still just beginning- I'm noticably lacking long term datum...

It's funny how I get to see others take their 'space' & eco-climate-mechanical awareness to fit as closely together as possible. And this isn't just for chickens. For pets, themselves, & their homes too. Utilitarian-ism 'leveled up' a la 20d thinking.

Cool idea. I really like the plexiglass upgrade. I am curious if you'd thought of louvering the plexiglass at all?

No but I don't see why it wouldn't work. It would take more carpentry skills than my simple plexiglass baffles, but not too difficult. I hope someone gives it a try. Maybe you?

I am very fascinated with this idea of feeder. I have 2 questions:
1) What is the ratio of hens to the bucket/bottle feeder?
2) how often are you refilling it at it's current updated stage?

Thanks in advance.
aart

1. Maybe 15...depends on the flock dynamics. I do have other feeders I put out when I have younger birds integrating.
2. I have always topped off feed daily to keep track of consumption volume. This feeder as made to reduce 'bill out' waste not for duration of refilling. You could do the current design in a 7gal bucket to increase capacity.
