I managed to plant 6 hills of summer squash before the rain chased me inside. 3 hills of Cupcakes and 3 hill of Golden Nugget.

Pruned, wrapped, and tied my Summer squash.

Found one squash bug, fed it to Naomi. I swear she "smacked her lips" after eating it!
There are a few 1-2" squash fruits on the vines.
I was pleased with how well the squash plants produced last year, the first time I tried this method. This is my first season with vining yellow summer squash. Once this stormy spell is over I'll plant some of the seed and some in sequential plantings. I had planned on using a cattle panel for them but I like the way you could wrap them on the stakes. I'm going to try and drive some 2x2's in the ground that are 8' long down about a foot and a half into our clay leaving the squash 6 1/2' to grow on. I'm thinking it will not hurt to connect the tops of the stakes down the row and across the row to make a stronger place for them to climb. We get some strong winds here and I need to be prepared. I may can rip some 2x4's into 3 stakes that would make them easier to drive into the ground. Going to try that first.
How tall are they? Can you use a netting? For anyone who has cherry trees... how do you keep the birds from eating the cherries? This is the first year we will get a cherry crop, IF the birds don't get them.
Does the reflective tape work?
It would be a challenge to get netting over them. I'm thinking I need to look for something. How tall are they? Can you use a netting?
I used that stuff last year and ended up getting two wild birds stuck in it. One I was able to rescue and the other died. We put a frame around the blueberries this year and still used that stuff. I forgot how much I hate itIt would be a challenge to get netting over them. I'm thinking I need to look for something.
Not the flimsy 1/2" black plastic stuff. That gets all tangled in the plant (used it on blueberries last year) and you end up tearing off leaves and buds to get it off at the end of the season.
