WJPA DISCUSSION THREAD
Most of you have never heard of the Wisconsin Junior Poultry Association. That is why this thread exists. I am posting a discussion thread here, and I will answer questions about our organization. I am not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this thread, so you may direct it otherwise if you wish.
The WJPA is basically the American Poultry Association for kids who live in Wisconsin. So unless you live in Wisconsin, the information in this thread is not relevant to you. :p We help run a lot of the junior divisions of Wisconsin APA shows and organize a lot of activities and events for the kids.
During Wisconsin International the activities we do include a speaking competition, a poster competition, an egg competition, poultry quiz bowl, Pullet Surprise competition, showmanship, a poultry photo competition, a raffle, showmanship, and ACE. And who could forget the most important part, our junior show?
I am helping coordinate the photography competition, so I can answer any questions in this area.
I am also pushing to add a new Poultry Judging Contest, so any support there would help.

Thank you! Any questions?
Why would I join the WJPA? Are you a 4-H member or parent of a 4-H member who would like to show poultry at some of the bigger local shows? Would you like to become involved with other youth in engaging, educational poultry activities? Want to do showmanship at Wisconsin International and eventually become a showmanship judge?
These are good reasons to join the WJPA. There are also many great leadership opportunities.
What is ACE?
This link will explain the ACE program. When you complete all four books, you can become a certified showmanship judge, and the pre-apprenticeship judging program. http://youthexhibitionpoultry.org/achievements.htm
What is the Avian Quiz Bowl?
The Avian Quiz Bowl is a quiz competition where teams study from the Avian Quiz Bowl Manual.
This link will bring you to this year's information.

What is the maximum age a person can be a member? You mention 4-H, what about FFA?

You don't have to be in 4-H or FFA to be in the WJPA, but if you like those kinds of things, you probably would like this.
Usually someone 18 or older would leave the WJPA, partly due to college, and it's just that, a junior division.

We are in WI and I posted a question on this site earlier asking what section/ breed to enter our Easter Egger chickens under for the 4H fair. Please advise as to what you would suggest

Ok, so this is often dependent upon your individual county fair. I have showed an Easter Egger at the fair before and entered her in the egg class. Some fairs have a backyard class. What classes other than the breed classes does your fair have?

There is a cross bred egg type class, and then there are a couple of others labeled all other . . . . standard, American, continental, etc. There is no "backyard" class for our fair.

I would put her in crossbred egg type then, even though she’s not really crossbred egg type. I did that and they evaluated mine based on egg laying capacities. Hopefully they are lenient with yours too.

I have a question for you! How do I sign my kids up for WJPA? I found this website: https://sites.google.com/view/wiscojuniorpoultry/join-wjpa

It appears like the "Join" tab is supposed to include a signup form, but there is just a big blank space.
