Hey y'all! I'm very new to this whole chicken raisin' thing...in fact it happened by the will of God I suppose. My hubby & I have talked for years about wanting to raise chickens, but never did much about it. We didn't feel the timing was ever right. We recently moved to a new property, so I guess God felt as though now was when we should give it a try. The night before my birthday (June 13th), my mother-in-law & I were driving home pretty late from Wally world (aka Wal-mart) and there was a chicken on the side of the road. It was 10:30 pm & we knew she should've been roosting by then, plus this was not the "chicken district" part of town. So, we figured she was lost and took her home. I felt as though this was my birthday gift from God. We figure she must've fallen off a chicken truck (Pilgrim's Chickens uses our road for their route).
So, I have lots of questions! I have read lots if great advice so far in this forum...Thank God for the internet! Please send me advice and ask all the questions you can think of to find out more about how to help our "Lucky Lady."
Through reading this forum I do know she is a Leghorn pullet. She is currently roosting in our shed and roams free during the day. Without having been prepared for her, she is eating infant rice cereal for breakfast, and snacks on chopped carrots, green beans, watermelon, strawberries, bagels, English muffins, & all the bugs she can find. She doesn't scratch around much, though. I feel its because she has been raised thus far in an industrial chicken house.
Thank you for being here to share my concerns.
