Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

After her molt this year, Agnes got in one black & white feather... Just a single one on her back... So intriguing. I really need to deep dive chicken feather genetics and figure this out...
My older 6-yr-old Dominique started sprouting solid black feathers after her molts. Some solid feathers on her chest, sides, & back. Doesn't seem to cause any problems:

I didn't think it would cause problems or anything, it's just fascinating... I know hatchery Rhode Island reds are a genetically mixed bag nowadays, but questions explode in my brain:
1. What is in her mix?
2. What are the genetic factors that cause changes in a single feather without changing overall coloration of the bird?
3. How does the expression of these genetic markers change over successive molts?

... At which point I'm basically giggling like a schoolgirl thinking about all the research I get to do... 🤓

(I'm such a nerd and tend to dive head first into anything that sparks my interest)

My current silkie hen Peanut, who's actually been featured before, and my silkie roo that I just gave away. This is when he wasn't violent, just super chill and sweet. He was the last one of my original 3 that I had. His name is Cookie, and he was so cute and pretty 😊
