Skirt? Do you mean something to deflect water aware from the base of each column, or do you mean a railing?

Not so much for water deflection, having the wood raised a little from the concrete as your builders have done will help prevent the post bases from rotting. I was thinking more of something to hide that gap.

No, I decided I liked the simplicity and honesty of the expressed joins.

However, the idea of planter boxes in front of the slab has legs, if not budget (yet). It'll encourage people towards the steps and soften the appearance.
