Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Oh sweet Matilda. I've really enjoyed reading her story, truly. You have a great way with words. I relate so much to her story. I mentioned earlier I bonded with a chicken over her Bumblefoot. Had I never tried to treat it, I never would have gotten to know her as more than a farm chicken. She...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

I hope you aren't feeling too hard on yourself about this. You can be the most perfect chicken keeper in the world and still not control what your chickens decide to do. The odds of something this specific happening are one in a million! A chicken's gonna do what a chicken's gonna do. As...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Haha I honestly didn’t notice the pun. Yes you definitely do need to laugh even in the bad times. Tissue regrowth often looks like that and it takes a long time. I don’t know the medical words for what I am seeing, but I’ve had several large wounds affecting muscle tissue and total removal of...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

From the experiences of Barth the rooster, his owner has to help him preen and give very occasional baths. She rubs his face with a soft toothbrush to help him scratch where he can’t scratch. She keeps a chicken diaper on him so he can stay on a soft pillow because he has experienced tissue...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Not trying to step on anyone’s toes but research has shown for some time moist wounds heal at a rate three to five times faster than dry wounds. Especially when a foot is involved and the risk of 💩 contamination is high, personally I would want to keep the wound covered. However, she is already...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

I am inclined to suggest treating it like any other wound. Apply antibiotic ointment and keep it wrapped. Her body trying to form new skin and tissue around the nub. I literally know almost nothing about frostbite, but I imagine each case is different when the detachment occurs.

I hate to hear that she did lose it, but we all knew it was coming :( I am anxious to hear additional updates. Thank you!

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

It looks like she will at least get to keep her foot pad which is good! I think you've become her flock now :) I'm glad to see she is still doing well. I have tended to the bumblefoot on one of my hens for a couple of years now, and I believe it was because of the constant handling, but she...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

You're welcome! His story is what drew me into IG if I'm being honest. I believe last fall he had a major health scare with a respiratory infection, and he has some ups and downs with how he is feeling, but he was in far worse shape than your hen when she acquired him. Please do keep us up to...

Personally I am of the opinion of "when in doubt, medicate." Just make sure she has probiotics or fermented feed in her diet. Best to stop the infection before it happens! Usually once we see it, it's already been present for a while. She needs all the help she can get.

Poor baby. I'm sorry. Poultry DMV featured Barth here: http://www.poultrydvm.com/cases/barth I don't think the article mentions the moment he loses his feet, but she had talked about it in some of her IG posts. He is a testament to hope and recovery.

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

If you have an Instagram, reach out to lipstick_and_chickens. She adopted a rooster with feet in the same stage as your hens and he lost his feet. Be prepared, she will feel when the feet break off, and it will be incredibly awful. There is no sugar coating it. She went into graphic detail of...
