Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

I think that it might help give her some support. There is a seller on Etsy who makes custom 3D printed poultry prosthetics. It would save you the driving and searching. Here's the link to his listing-...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

I bet cnombined it might work pretty well. I have some left over craft foam I was just looking at that might work to. If you find some semi sturdy foam at a craft store with some give, it might give some shock absorption when she steps? I like the pool noodle. That will be sturdy and probably...

Hmm, that is an issue. I want to first say great job documenting this process! Its been a while since I've posted on this thread, but you've done a great job! I'm not entirely sure what you want to do for her stumps. Maybe more padding? You need something with shock absorption. Do you think that...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

I would suggest a walker. Put her in the sling for part of the day, but I would keep her in the walker for most of the time. The walker allows her to put some weight on her legs, while supporting he rest of her body weight to help her learn to walk. Best you do this on a hard wood or flat floor...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Though I would be worried about bacteria being trapped in the wrapping, and air flow to the wound being kept away, this is also great advice. :)

Your are exactly right, you really don't want the foot to dry out. The key to this, a VERY important step, is to apply a THICK layer of Neosporin over the wound/stump to keep it moist. The Neosporin keeps it moist, while protecting it from bacteria with the antibacterial features. Then, the key...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Wrapping can actually trap bacteria on the wound, and cause more damage. I wouldn't wrap until its healed, just keep a thick layer of Neosporin on it, and keep her in that sling so the messy stump isn't sitting on the ground. I personally like to use Epsom salts, I know it helps remove infection...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Bag Balm wont heal it at this point, she's going to loose the feet and nothing is going to stop that. I have heard that bag balm can help with comfort, but its not going to ward off infection, or anything like that. Its worth a try, though I see Neosporin being more affective. :thumbsup Keep...

I agree. I have an older hen who I am assuming is 8. We had a full team renter put her chickens in with ours, and when sh moved out she left her chickens here. So we adopted her, not sure on age. Anyway, she didn't' eat for a while, mealworms and table scraps were what kept her alive. I recently...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

I don't have an swear to your question, but always always always ask. That is what were here for, never feel like you asking to much. I once took the advise of an article off the internet, and then took the advice that a BYC member said, and didn't expand my research. That hen passed because of...

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Heres a video for a chickens sling for her- And a walker as well, making her one so she can practice walking around may be good, but it will be necessary later.

Matilda is going to lose her feet. :(

Oh my gosh! I just finished reading this thread, that is heartbreaking. I'm so sorry your going through this. Just remember, Matilda know she is loved. She knows your caring for her, and she knows that even though it hurts, things will get better, even without feet. Remember that, things will...
