When I got chickens no one I knew had the knowledge I have now and I didn’t know about BYC. This community has been invaluable to me.

I’ve been through a lot of chicken crisis and I’m still learning. However, one thing that I wish I’d had was the following diagnostic information.

Chicken symptoms
Excessive repetitive sneezing
Breathing hectic or gasping
Otherwise fine

Possible issue: Mycoplasma (chronic respiratory disease)

No cure

Treatment is available for personal chicken handlers (not commercial) by administering Tiagard (Denegard) which is around $20-30 dollars on Amazon.

Dosing is: Do not give undiluted or they will throw it up.

Gallon = Typical adult chicken waterer
Quart = Typical baby chick waterer

SYRINGE
3ML per Quart
12ML per Gallon

SPOON
Tablespoon per Gallon
Quarter teaspoon per Quart

See instructions for treatment duration on container. Write the dosage on the container in case you need it quickly and are in crisis.

This disease is highly contagious and you might need to treat the whole flock.

I know this because I had to learn it the hard way and it turned my hen around in 24 hours. It is more common than you think. It lays dormant in the flock until stress and then it activates and brings severe symptoms. I welcome others to share more respiratory guidance here beyond this disease and treatments that works for their hens.
