Good advice! Just keep in mind, if you live in the country, the further from your house you put the coop, the more appealing it may look to bears. Our neighbors have it as far from their house as possible, and had two bear break-ins this year. We have it close (ca. 40 feet) and had none. Also, we decided to get a goose and raise it along with our chicks: a lot of fun, and fantastic predator protection! Geese have a whole set of requirements of their own, of course, like plentiful water.
I do love waking up to the crowing of a rooster! But that’s a matter of preference. Another consideration if you have your coop close to your house: the smell. This hasn’t been an issue for us so far, probably because I use a sprinkling of diatomaceous earth on the bedding, and take the most soiled part (right beneath the roosts) out every day.
I made movies about building our coop and run. I would have been fine with a simple design, but my husband likes to do a bit of carpentry in his spare time!
