This is our duck run. We are not handy at all. We need to replace this latch. Our door only swings out. With the current latch, we cannot cover the space between the door and side with wood without leaving a huge gap because the latch needs room. I also need it to be easy for a 7 and 11 yo to latch. Ideas???

I something wrong with the latch? Or do you just want to replace it so you can do something about the gap?
Couldn't you fill the gap above and below the latch?

I have the same type of latch on my temporary coop & I did exactly like you did with zip tying the fencing to the gate. If it is hard to open or close the gate needs to be adjusted which could be on the hinge side.
What I did differently is I put a layer of hardware cloth fencing on first that has about 1”x 2” holes. I let this overlap both sides of the gate on the hinge & latch side & notched out around the hinges & latch with wire cutters. Then I placed a layer of 1/2”x 1/2” hardware cloth over the first yet & zipped both layers down with heavy black zip ties.
