I hatched out some Ayam Cemani chicks today! @Yard Farmer and some other people asked me to make a thread on raising them. They are still hatching, and two are some of my own barnyard mix eggs.

I’m not home right now, so I’m not sure if any more have hatched, but before I left, two had hatched. One Cemani and one Bolt egg (chick would be an EE X BR-Black Australorp)

I have three Cemani eggs and two Bolt eggs. All have pipped (two have hatched) I just am waiting for the three others to hatch.

My broody hen had a bad experience hatching her own eggs last year, so I’ve not given her eggs to hatch. Last fall I did give her TSC chicks though, and she did amazing. I am hoping that when I put the chicks under her, she will take to them.

Her three TSC pullets are the sweetest things. Much sweeter than the ones I’ve hand raised (besides Bolt.) I am hoping that her raising the Ayam Cemani and Bolt chicks will make them trust humans and be just as friendly as my TSC chicks.

Fingers crossed for healthy chicks, and for two Cemani hens and one roo.

That's so great! I have you have good hatch rates, and you get the lucky trio you're hoping for!

Very excited to see pictures. Good luck introducing your chicks to the mother hen.

That's such great hatch rates for Ayams! When I had mine, I never got hatch rates like that. Haha!
Awesome.
I think I mentioned to you how awful I am at updates 😅

All five chicks are growing very well under their loving momma. She absolutely adores them.

I have found that I can find the gender of my birds fairly well by their tail feathers when they are young.
The last chicks I had, my rooster had no tail feathers for a few weeks, while the three pullets did have tail feathers.

Well, with the AC’s, they are have tail feathers unfortunately. One of my barnyard mixes does, and the other doesn’t. Of course, I’m glad that they all aren’t roosters, but I’m still bummed out that I most likely don’t have an AC hen. I’m hoping that I can lease my friends rooster. She hatched out AC’s at the same time as me, so I’m hoping I can borrow her roo (if she has one) to breed him to my girls when they are older so that I can get my own rooster.

Haha, you're good! I was thinking about this thread just the other day actually. 😂

That's fantastic, I'm glad shes being a good momma.

Can you post a few pictures of your chicks?
I, personally, have found tail feathers can tend to be quite unreliable... No offence to you.

Yes, I have a picture of one of the chicks.

I lost two of the chicks today though. A Yellow Rat snake ate them. Phoenix (one of the barnyard EE’s) and one of the AC’s. I’m super bummed out.

This is the best pic I have. I’ll try to get a better one later or in a few days.
