My conclusion is that the Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers must be really difficult to sex. Everyone I know, myself included, who has purchased sex pullets ends with 50% roosters anyway. Mine came from McMurray and another hatchery who's name I don't remember now. The McMurray EEs don't have...
I have legbars and they don't lay from about October until April. I have one hen that finished molting and is laying 1 or 2 eggs a week, but the others are on extended holiday. I crossed them with Ameraucana and the offspring are better layers. My EEs all lay better than the legbars. Some of...
My clients love the green eggs. I've got people at work fighting over who gets to buy the next dozen. They say they are fun to eat when the are pretty!
My red ones can be mean, and some of the black ones are even meaner, one of the white ones is super mean, and the blues are CRAZY!
Sure, there are some breeds that are more docile or more aggressive, but you really can't put a label on them all.
I don't think there is a feather color correlation to egg color. I have birds of all colors that lay green or blue eggs, and same with the brown eggs. I do think the hens with muffs and beards lay nicer eggs that those without, but maybe it is cuteness factor influencing my judgement.
One of my February pullets laid eggs for 2 months and then quit last month. She is molting and looks half naked. Last year's pullets didn't molt until this year, but I guess some of them do their own thing.
My EEs are usually pretty wild. I've got one that is 2 years old and still as wild and crazy as when she was a chick. I've got a couple that I played with a lot since they hatched and they are much better. It seems like you have to handle them multiple times a day to get them to be friendly...
Those are the cutest stinkin' pullets! If I had to guess I'd say they are Ameraucana (possibly wheaten) crossed with an Amber white or other breed that is heterozygous for dominant white.
I agree that the EEs don't do well in that kind of heat. We had crazy hot/humid weather in Seattle this year. My EEs would be the first ones in the coop and would just stand there on the top roost panting all afternoon. Clearly they don't understand that heat rises. ;) I was surprised they...
Not all Marans are "bullies" I have three that are as sweet as can be. They only get bossy when they are broody. I have Ameraucanas that don't seem to like the cool climate at all. They stop laying at the first sign of fall and don't lay all winter. My EEs are much better layers.
Dooze - your pullet with become more colorful after her next two molts. She still will probably have a different colored body than the rest of her. I'm sure she will be beautiful though!
Your roosters are all so beautiful. My adolescent cockerels are just going through their final molt. I can't wait to see what they look like when they are all "grown up".
My Araucanas came form a very back yard breeder so I wouldn't recommend her as a place to get quality birds. I actually weighed my birds the other day. My sisters seem to be the same size when you look at them. They range from 3.5 - 4 pounds. However, there is one that is built like a block...
In my experience, the Legbars are horrible layers. I would not recommend them to anyone. Some of them lay huge eggs, but the egg quality is poor and if you plan to breed/hatch them the hatch rates are not good. My legbar eggs are very rough shelled. I prefer a smooth, shiny shell like I get...
Pros:
Beautiful colors - seems like no two are alike
Not too big and not too small.
Entertaining
Beautiful, shiny eggs
Good egg production (5 - 6 per week from mine)
100% hatch rate in the incubator!
Hardy babies
Good in all types of weather
Cons:
Can be flighty
Will lay eggs where they...
