Pruned, wrapped, and tied my Summer squash.
Found one squash bug, fed it to Naomi. I swear she "smacked her lips" after eating it!
There are a few 1-2" squash fruits on the vines.
I also pruned the lowest branches of the tomatoes.
The lettuce is about spent, ready to bolt.
Then I thinned...
My feral cats have been walking on my raised bed gardens even though I have covered them with bird netting (they can't dig in the newly-planted beds). I have ordered some more plastic chicken fencing to put an end to that nonsense.
No mice, no moles, no shrews, and the squirrels are...
As one flower finishes blooming for the season... (Amaryllis)
Others continue to bloom (primroses)
And begin to bloom (pickerel rush)
Milkweed
Hydrangea (they'll get bigger & more blue)
Crinum lilies
And Summer squash!
The droppings give them away. If I have trouble finding hornworms that I know are there, I lean over and look at the foliage from a different angle, lower if possible.
The first blossoms opened today.
These evening primroses are descendants of plants my mother grew in the late 1960s.
Today was my mother's birthday, she would have been 96 but she passed away 30 years ago.
Happy birthday, Mom. Your primroses are still going strong...
Helpers in the garden!
Last night I wrapped and staked my Summer squash.
First I cut back the outer leaves, careful to not cut the main stalk/vine.
Then I dug away some of the dirt at the base and laid barrier fabric or cloth around the main stem. I wound it around the stalk so there were...
Whew. I don't feel as inadequate.
I transplanted the Roma tomatoes on April 7th, the German Johnsons on April 13th. They were in 4 pack containers, about 3" tall.
After church and lunch I transplanted the marigolds into pots:
I put the edging in place, but didn't "set" it yet. It's staying upright on its own, for now.
I made myself go outside and turn the top 4" of soil in raised bed #1. Then I planted cantaloupes, watermelons, and borage. I covered it all with netting to keep the cats and squirrels out.
Not much to see:
Thank you!
I still have not planted my melons, partly because I don't have a spare trellis until the peas are done.
And it was 90° here, the heat got to me today, I could only putter around the gardens. I have to slowly acclimate to the summer heat, can't rush it or I get heat exhaustion...
Still no rain, so I watered most of my plants late this afternoon.
My perennial garden is looking full
Light green plants by the concrete bird bath are sedum, darker green with compound leaves are coreopsis, large simple leaf plants are canna lilies. Red blooms are amaryllis. In the second...
