I thought an update was in order. I have successfully broken the nest sleeper habit by moving the hen to the roosts just after dusk, took 7 evenings. All eggs now roll into the box without getting hung up on waste. However, I am still getting a few eggs broken. I was gathering eggs and saw one...

Not always. I thought it was related but I have moved the offending hen each night for the past five and got an egg eaten. This evening she was on the roosts.

Yes, would recommend to anyone with egg eaters. They ladies carry trash in so weekly maintenance probably a good idea. The hens now only use the new nests; only one divider but they spread out evenly; 95%+ eggs roll to the front; mornings have 5-7 nests in use; production increasing (probably...

I have had a few instances of eggs being eaten while in the new nests. I also have two pullets that sleep in the new nests and their waste will stop the egg from rolling. I am moving these two from nests to roosts each evening until they are no longer in the nests.

Plus 3 nest holes... I continue to cut/fit pieces and sections and "dry fit" together. Below the front extension piece for 3 more nests, total of 7. Also building nest dividers: will attach to back wall using two narrow 7' boards, horizontally top and bottom, with slots cut vertically; final...

Thank you. This project evolved against the issues I had. I re-used the front red panel (my copy of @aart 's nest box - thank you) from my iteration 2, will extend it by 32" with 3 more round holes. Yes there is some pecking, the same as they peck at the straw I previously used. I do not have...

The egg box cover is two 5 1/2 inch by 7 foot panels; one of 3/4" pine the other of door skin (1/8" ply board); joined together with 3 hinges. I added a 1"x1" to one edge of 1/8" panel for rigidity, strength and hinge mount space. Currently "dry fit" in place and working well. Artificial grass...

Life interfered: along the back of my pole shed I store firewood, the top part fell onto my bachelor cage; it took most of yesterday to move the wood and repair damage. My artificial grass rug arrived, 2' by 8' edges bound; revised nest box floor is 20" by 7'. Began to build the egg capture...

Strongly agree ease of change is important. Floor held both sides with a 3" by 20" 3/8s plywood triangle screwed to end panels; easily replaced. The red nest holes board is held in place with 2 screws; I will build a 2nd red nest holes front and mount same way. I very much appreciate the...

I have ordered this for the floor: I had chosen 2" will now set my opening to 3.5". Any input on slope? I have 3" down over 20" length.

Height of Roll Away Opening? I found this diagram showing 4.5", seems high to me? Diagram also shows 18" for depth of the nest (mine are 12" x 12" x 16"H). Thoughts anyone?

I expanded my 3+ year old flock in 2023, added 12 Chanteclers and 8 mixed coloured egg layers. I moved 5 males to an external cage but multiple males amongst other pressures arising from increased flock size required a change/expansion to my nest box arrangement. This is what I had (actually...
