How many chickens should I keep

I had goats as a kid. They were fun pets. They would follow us around eating wild blackberries.

How many chickens should I keep

😂 Yes! We started out with 10 that were supposed to be sexed pullets. Then, I saw two Amerecauna at the farmers market I had to have. One of them turned out to be a rooster - as did 9 of the sexed pullets. We weren't set up for roos so had to find a home fast. We also ordered 5 cream...

How many chickens should I keep

I see. My guess is she only read a couple of posts in this long thread and didn't see your plans and was trying to be helpful. I've never know Ms K to be anything other than helpful in the time I've been in this forum. She helped us come to a decision on what to do with 9 roosters when I first...

How many chickens should I keep

I think she meant the word "NOW", but I think K meant it as emphasis - not as yelling or condescendence.

How many chickens should I keep

My comments were not aimed at you - but the person who insists you can get 25 birds in your coop. I really hope you find a way to keep them. I know I would not want to part with any of mine

How many chickens should I keep

No. It's definitely untenable at best and cruel at the worst. Thankfully, OP came here for advice and was willing to heed it. NO!!!! stop telling people this and do some research! So many very informed people on this thread, including @21hens-incharge (an official moderator and respected...

How many chickens should I keep

In addition to the coop and run space, the coop should have about 8-12 inches of roosting space per bird. So, if we say 10 in and 13 birds - 130 inches total - or about 10-11 ft of roosting space total. And keep in mind that you cannot have half a chicken on a roosting bar - and make sure it...

This is a great idea if you have the room.

How many chickens should I keep

Agreed. Run space doesn't appear to be the issue. You need 52 square ft if coop space and 130 SW ft run for 13 birds assuming no flock growth in the future

And those measurements are the minimum humane standards. Of course, large poultry enterprises don't adhere to them - and it's the reason I decided to do my own eggs. I hate those tiny coops that advertise it holds 20 chickens - but is actually only humane for about 4. They shouldn't be allowed...

How many chickens should I keep

Yeah. I understand attachment. I love my babies. It's why I suggested more coop space and not rehoming. Those measurements assume standard breeds. If you are keeping giants or bantams, they differ.

How many chickens should I keep

If your nesting boxes are taking up part of that 25 SQ ft then, you don't have 25 SQ feet. I think 5-6 is maximum. Your birds don't have enough coop space with that small of a coop. I would honestly consider adding some coop space. We have 620 ft of run space and we have 2 coops. One is 80 SQ...

How many chickens should I keep

At most, 5 birds with that size coop assuming it's standard breeds. 20-25 is far too many. Edit: fixed typo
