Here's my LF EE girl from Cackle... 5 1/2 months old and lays a blue egg. She is small, which is why I kept her rather than her sister. Then the next pictures are two of my three bantam EE chicks that are 3 weeks old.
Aggressive won't necessarily make him the best for free ranging. One of my roosters was a real weenie growing up but turned out to be THE BEST ROOSTER EVER. He was good to the girls, never aggressive to me, and his world revolved around the girls and the chicks and being alert and making sure...
How old is it? Usually red wing patches mean boy but those are low, not the shoulders. I had a girl that looked just like her. It sort of depends on age though, given how red the comb is looking right now.
Yes, it's definitely that time of year when supplemental heat requirements are low if you are brooding outdoors like I do (which I highly recommend when possible!).
Earlier this year I had quite a few EEs, from Cackle and tractor supply. I only keep one from Cackle and sold all the rest, and picked up another from a swap. So here are mine!
My oldest girl, Snakehead, is a year and a half and actually went broody recently! Here she is puffed up because she...
Yes, that is what you do to roosters to calm them so you can milk the semen from them for artificial insemination. What I have read is that they instinctively "play dead" when placed on their backs, to cause a predator to lose interest when they are in that very vulnerable position. Moving or...
I had four EE cockerels and decided to keep this one. He's a real cutie that was sold to me as a sexed pullet. He's kind of a wuss but my late Japanese bantam rooster was like that too and turned out to be one of the best boys you could as for so I have high hopes for him. I hope he does not get...
At that age the tail feathers and hackles won't be very "manly" yet (IME). I use the comb and wattles as the first indicator, and that's usually pretty accurate since they develop before male feathering. Also, the black & white coloring increases the odds of it being male.
The ones around here, and a lot of hatcheries, don't even bother with the mispelling. My closest feed store sells "Aracaunas" since Murray McMurray calls their EEs "Ameraucana/Aracauna". It irks me to no end, whether its done intentionally or not.
