Sorry to hear about your ducks :(
Thanks for the tip! I will try singing those tiny feathers off with these last two. :)
I don't want to skin them because I'd be losing all that wonderful juicy duck fat. :)
It's quiet in here!!
Well, bird related, a family friend has been hunting ducks but doesn't eat them. So I acquired 4 (possibly more on the way) and have been learning how to clean and dress duck. The most I've ever done in the past is quail and they are SO much easier since you can just skin...
Thanks! I am on the lookout for more! They really are the perfect size as a brooder (my original use) and for male quail. I think I would prefer to keep my egg layers in something else to make eggs easier to collect. :)
Sounds like moving your cages would fix your issue. Good luck! :)
@Hollowoakfarm Forgot to mention I cut the holes in the shipping crate to allow for plexiglass windows and top ventilation. The top squares are fitted with hardware cloth and I designed them to fit standard filters (heat/air register filters) but seem to have lost them during our move this past...
Oh dear! I think mine must be more used to activity since they live in the garage and get to see me and/or my car moving around every day. :)
By shipping crate I mean this: it is 4' x 3.75' (housing 14 adult quail, 13 are hens)
And as for bin, I mean this: according to my calculations it has...
Oh no! Haha
Are they jumping up and hurting their necks on the top of their enclosure? I read about that being an issue but so far I've not had that problem. My enclosure is a shipping crate I got from a warehouse that is about waist high. Makes collecting eggs difficult though so I think I may...
I only started raising Coturnix quail this year and have been loving it! I have lost a couple of males to fighting injuries (they are really rough on each other if there are females around!!!) and I lost one girl randomly, no visible injuries and she was at POL so not quite sure what happened...
Hahaha! I hear you on baking with quail eggs! I'm very glad to have them though because like so many others, my chickens haven't laid any eggs since a little before Christmas!
No idea about price or a rooster source but I just wanted to say they sound like beautiful birds! I shouldn't get involve with more than one leghorn breed (trying exchequer leghorns right now) but they would be great eye candy! :)
What a perfect day for first eggs!!! :)
@tammyfarms Nice variety! I remember you were starting with the Rhodebars when we came over and picked up those cedar shavings!
Well things changed a lot for us in the past 18 months! We moved to the northern part of Sanford and bought our first house! It came with a shed even bigger than the...
Welcome back!!!! Missed seeing you post on here!!! Would love to hear what kind of birds you have now and any new projects you're working on. A lot can change in 18 months!
I really wanted to go to the Cape Fear Poultry Show tomorrow but I have been really sick and am just finally starting to get better so I won't be going in case the long drive and big day would cause me to backtrack on the healing process.
Hope everyone has a great time out there and enjoys the...
For those of you using nipple waterers in 3-5 gallon buckets for your chickens this winter, I have found a very affordable shatterproof water heater that will keep your buckets from freezing solid!
These are only 7 inches long so they should fit in most water buckets...
