I usually try to grow enough that's there enough for the critters to have a nibble here and there but it doesn't hurt my harvest. This year though.... Jeez
There's literally thousands of insects and there's no way I can keep up with them all. Therefore, in my mind, there are two kinds of bugs... beneficial ones and chicken treats. I learn the good guys and the rest.... GULP!
I've heard of them and watched several Youtube vids concerning them. I'm interested in growing them but haven't gotten my hands on cuttings yet. There is kale that grows that way as well.
If you have undisturbed areas that haven"t been tilled or trampled too much, it's most definitely there. You don't have to go looking for it though. Create the conditions it needs, and it will come to you.
Leaf mold is basically composted leaves. I just shred then and add them directly to the garden and allow them to break down in place. You don't necessarily have to shred them but I have mostly oak which takes longer to decompose and the extra surface area helps it. I believe the word you're...
I go the 'no till' route so I sheet mulch with compost, wood chips, leaf mold, worm castings etc. I let the worms and the soil microbes do the work for me
I've been gardening for a few years now but decided this year to start leaning towards more perennial crops and herbs. We still do annuals, but if there is a perennial substitution, we'll choose that. We planted tons of brassicas and cole crops already but just got in a batch of Jerusalem...
I can't help, but there is an excellent group on Facebook called Plant Identification that is amazing at this. They'll give you the common name and the scientific name as well most times
Jealous of all the fall garden pics. I recently had double hernia surgery so it put a damper on my gardening plans this year. I'm excited to get a few greens to volunteer but for the most part, my garden is just a sea of oat grass which will die off when the first real frost hits. Any of my...
I simply make my own seed tape from toilet paper. I mix a little flour with water to make a paste, lay out tape measure next to rolled out toilet paper that's been split in half longways, put a small dab of paste at proper spacing for whatever seed I'm planting, add one seed per dab of paste...
Went home to tend to my critters on my lunch break to find that my neighbor had dropped a box of strawberry plants over my back fence. He's elderly and giving up gardening. The strawberries were the last thing he held onto. Guess I know what I'll be doing when I get off work. lol I'll have to be...
I actually have hostas growing in my edible frontyard landscaping for just this reason, along with sweet potato vine, marigolds and dianthus (all edible and beautiful). I have not yet harvested any because the plants are young.
