not botulism... MOLD. most molds produce toxins of one kind or another, and the kind that builds up in hay is usually not friendly with anything that comes in contact with it.

so give him a couple of the smaller 3 week-ers, and he'll be running around with them in no time. I combine ages up to 3 weeks apart all the time.

ccl are all crested, yes, but their crests tend to be minimal, as that's what they were selected for. unlike sfh, they don't have the problems of breeding crest to crest as vaulted skulls seem to have been eliminated from the breed as well (which enhances the appearance of huge crests).

you really can't compare different breeds, since they develop at different rates, some have larger combs than others, etc. so it's like comparing apples to oranges. my bantam cochins are often crowing by 4 weeks old, while I may not be able to sex the sfh until they're 6-8 weeks old or more...

edit: nevermind, I realized my mistake in identifying the birds. LOL they're all very nice, brown looks like a cockerel, but blacks both look like pullets so far.

anywhere from 4-6 weeks, depending how long they've been in their pen outside. I like to keep them penned entirely for at least 2 weeks so they know where home is, then just start opening the door and letting them choose what they want to do.

personally, I would simply for curiosity sake... then again, I've never had compunctions about doing dissections/necropsies and like to 'look around' and try to learn more about them, which can only benefit the living birds more IMO.

my chicks complain loudly when the light goes off, their first few nights but they settle right down and go to sleep. I don't use heat lamps, but heat emitters. ceramic heating element that screws into a light socket. then I have lights on a timer for their daytime.

the trailer itself is a 1976 trail-it with the feed shelf at the front and a tack room in front of the horse section. it's ugly at best, the roof leaks slightly when it rains. I just added a couple roosts and a shelf that was over the nests (on the floor) but I'm moving the nest boxes up to the...

well, one less raccoon in the world. fortunately he hadn't got anyone yet. coops were still open as I just got home, much later than planned. tomorrow's plan is to dispose of the body in a shallow unmarked ditch, and call it road kill. then I need to re-do the horse trailer-coop. cleaned it...

(and then some...) yesterday my blind horse decided she wanted the chick feed so turned the pen over to get it. in the process she turned my youngest batch of chicks with a broody loose. well, momma;s doing an awesome job so I figured I'd keep an eye on her and 'supervise'... that girl has...
