I've never watched a hen lay before - this is a pullet that laid 6 eggs for us in Jan, went in to moult and then for the first time today took an hour to fuss and make 3 nests this afternoon. When I checked on her she looked like this- it looks like she is in labour, is that normal? I looked...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

My 3- 9 week old chicks are happily integrated in to the flock now! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my little frizzled cochin - she's so funny when she runs. :) My EEs chase them away from food, but the coop is big enough and they are starting to get smart at getting in there :)

My lavender orpington started laying last Sunday and she layed 6 eggs in 7 days!!! So excited - they are a pale tan/pinky colour. My BCM and Blue Copper Maran both started squatting for me today as well. The BLRW has started getting a comb and pinking up. Even one of my EEs has started to...

I will for sure! I've been anxiously waiting for the last 10 weeks :) I think my Wyandotte and EEs are still very far off - maybe by summer!

We got our first squatter today! Our lavender Orpington Sylvie squatted for the first time - hopefully she inspires the rest of the free loading flock to get with it, they are all 30 weeks old this weekend! Ahhhh - so excited!

I'm all caught up! It's been a really busy month! My Houdan, Polish and drizzle Cochin chicks are 7 weeks now. I've had them in a little rabbit tractor out in the main pen for 2 weeks. Today I put then out with my girls. Everyone left them alone except for my Easter Eggers, who I used to think...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

The 5.5 week old babies are spending the night in the grow out coop partition tonight. The Houdan and Polish are fully feathered, but the frizzle isn't quite as feathered (so it seems- hard to tell!) Nervous putting the babies out. Today I had them in a little grow out pen in my main coop...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

We got up close to 60F today!!! So amazing. My 3 chicks spent the entire day outside in our old rabbit hutch that sits in the grass. They were so happy and are sleeping peacefully tonight. The Houdan makes the most incredible trilling sound :) Still no eggs from my 6 month old flock, so we had...

Our BLRW isn't mean, but she's not at all friendly to us. I'm going to work at that this summer! She won't come near us - Nellie Olsen, is Nellie Olsen, minus the meaness. But she's super bossy and nosy! Lol!

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Here's my pullet that I suspect is moulting. Every time she flaps her wings feathers go flying! It's my first time for any of my girls, so if she's not moulting I have no idea what's going on :) It's our first week of sun in months - everyone is loving the dry run :) My Easter...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Just came back inside from letting my little 4 weekers run around in a grow out pen. They had so much fun, I felt bad bringing them back in!

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Here's our Easter Egger Little One. I noticed today that she's actually surpassed the size of her hatch mates, even though she was half the size for the first 3 months! I call her a blue birchen partridge... Lol!

Thanks for the suggestions. I picked her up and felt around. I didn't feel anything hard in her stomach. I looked on her chest where it's mostly fluff and there are all new feathers coming in the whole chest area. I will keep checking!
