I have 2 foot feathered girls. For the most part they are fine in the winter months. The only time I had a problem is when one put her foot in the heated water bowl & got frostbite. It has since healed itself, the toe nail that fell off grew back in & she has had no lasting effects. But...

So I figured I would share a story about one of my Peepers (my youngest hens at 2 yo). She decided to venture into my yard when I opened the gate to feed the hens. Unfortunately for her all 4 of my dogs were out at the time & as soon as they realized she was out they came running. I couldn't...

If you have it use wood ash. I've used it in the past when mine had mites(I forgot to fill their dust bath) & dusted them every day for a week at dusk. Now I just make sure to have a full dust bath container for them & they dust themselves :)

Mine have only had fermented feed. They do get a handful of bird seed, food scraps & some yogurt at times. I think some are just more prone to fluffy bottoms that become poop collectors lol

The only times I had stinky hens was because they needed their feathers trimmed around their vent or the one that had a lac from the dog getting her. I think a soak may be a good way to see what it is. My hens that need the feathers trimmed around their vents can get very stinky if I dont...

I started tapping trees a couple years ago. The amount f sap depends in the size of a tree. And the time of year. I already tapped my trees this year & stopped because the trees budded already. I got about a gallon of sap & ended up with 2 pints of syrup. The 1st year I got as much sap as I...

2 free hay bales, an empty feed bag along with the normal roof and pan equals winter dust bathing area :) Normally it's in the coop but quickly fills up with littler.

I have had hawks around but never ever this bold. A couple months ago one was sitting on top of the compost area & the pullets were making a racket!!! I beliebe its a juvenile hawk with its boldness. I have hung cds up to deter it but they got tangled up and fell in the high winds we have...

Imagine my shock when my neighbor texts me there is a hawk in my coop!!! I'm at work but thankfully when he went out to check on his hens he realized something was wrong when his pullets were quiet and then heard a commotion from my coop. Thankfully my girls were ok. They jammed themselves into...

I spent a good part of yesterday picking up leaves. I have filled their old enclosed run & hoop coop full of them. The rest the hens spent spreading throughout the veggie garden for me. The bottom pic is of a calendula bloom I took yesterday. Amazing how nature can wiyh stand freezes &...

I do !! In fact I just gave mine & my neighbors hens one each yesterday. My girls will pick at them and the seeds. I am curious to see how my neighbors new hens like them :) I grow my own but I get some from my son's store as well. I line them up around the edges of the garden for the...

As some on here know I have a hoop coop. The first covering was a white tarp but it only lasted a year or so. I was lucky enough to find a billboard for free & used that for the 2nd *roof*. After a couple years, and the billboard flapping from the wind, its made tiny holes in the canvas. I...

My girls have drank from puddles in the yard ..........I just don't think they drink from it because they have no interest to walk on the rocks to get to it I guess? The water was actually green, so green you couldnt see to the bottom, until I added the pond fish. The fish did a great job...

I made a roof for barrels that hold my free wood shavings for the coop. Pond I moved into hen's area. They dont drink from it but hopefully they enjoy the bugs it attracts. This is their dusting area. In the center is the bottom of a plastic wreath holder container. The hay bales are the...
