Yes, you understood the cycle correctly. My hatches average about 83% of set eggs.
Because I have a genetic project I'm working on, my bator has been running non-stop since Sept. I vacuumed it out in august, started it up in Sept, and while it was empty for one week in dec vacuumed it again...
Lazy Gardner, they were my own eggs, all less than 10 days old, standard bred RIR. I no longer candle eggs, palpate does, ultrasound ewes, or preg check cattle. I used to do all of the above, but it just ate up time and money. I set them in an old cabinet Bator with no water. Humidity is...
And the bad mommy award goes to... ME!
I did something I've never done before. And considering how anal I am, this slip up is an indication of what 40+ lambs born in 5 days will do to your brain...
I totally forgot to put a batch of hatching eggs in lockdown. :-0
And what's worse is, I...
Rhodebar breed status in the US:
The ball has officially begun rolling on establishing the Rhodebars into the Standard. The standards committee is extremely helpful, we are well on our way. The breed club has been formed (RBCA), the first draft of a standard has been drafted, documentation for...
This weekend... AS the judge picked her up to judge her. Yep... bad timing. Dropped an egg right there as she was being pulled out of the cage. I thought she was much nicer than the other pullet I entered at the nationals, but the other one took BOV since egg laying does NOT correspond well...

I bet they'll be speckled eggs. ;-)
Hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving! I know I personally have way too many things to be thankful for to list - I'm truly blessed and wish that feeling on each of you.
We have a 26 week to pol rule here or you don't get to be a breeder. But out of all fairness? That is best accomplished by those hatched in Feb and March. Those late May hatches just get pushed back until the days start getting longer again.
Lesson here... for good fall laying and choosing...

What a really mad cockerel looks like:
In his opinion, cages and baths are for girls. The ONLY good thing about this show stuff is getting to sleep "next to" girls. ;-)
I have the opposite problem with my rir...most of the pullets are laying. That means I have 2 choices for the upcoming show in Knoxville... choose 2 better and more productive pullets who don't look as good since they've been laying a while now, or choose a few I don't like quite as well but...
Wow. The great thing is all that snow makes great insulation. ;-)
We broke a record low here in the last few hours. Out here in the barn the thermometer says 14. As soon as I'm finished milking I'm heading to the house, warm fire and hot coffee - the rest of the livestock can wait. Lol
