Here is a good series of videos for any that want to learn how to do a necropsy on a sick chicken that has died: http://partnersah.vet.cornell.edu/veterinarians/avian-necropsy-examination/exposing-organs Also, I saw an add for Nustock ointment (instead ofcream) in a jar...

Thank you for your comments. I have a medical background, and although I like to use as many natural methods as possible in raising my chickens, I do believe in using medicines within reason. I agree with culling sick birds with contagious diseases, but I will help people who want to try and...

Sorry for your loss. Did you necropsy her for egg yolk peritonitis? Antibiotics are about the only treatment for this to extend their lives unfortunately. I don't think Nustock will work for that, but I suppose the people on this thread should not ever hear about antibiotics or wormers.

Mumsy, one of the former regulars on here had a young cockerel last year that hat this. It is called subcutaneous emphysema, wind puff, or a leaking air sac. Usually it is only in one area, but Mumsy's chick blew up like a balloon all over, so she put him down. It usually occurs from trauma...

Just squirt a tiny amount of ointment into the eye by pulling the lower lid down. You probably need an extra pair of hands first time just to be safe. Eye ointments can be applied daily or twice a day since they stay in much longer than drops.

Procaine Penicillin G dosage for chickens is 1/10 ml injected into the breast muscle once daily for 4 days. You can give up to 1/4 ml safely, and just stick the needle in 1/2 inch or so (not sure of the length of your needles.) When they lay a soft-shell egg that breaks inside like that it can...

Eye worm is very rare, and only found in tropical areas where the Surinam cockroach is found. The tiny worm can actually be seen in the eye. I think there is an irritant of some sort (ammonia, dust, feed) or maybe a little infection. Look into the eye carefully and examine it. A lubricant...

I have always heard that weasels can fit through 1 inch chicken wire, so for that reason most people use 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Tea Chick, I've never seen a weasel in southern Ohio, but we have them. I have seen dead mink on the roads. If I were you, I would go over every inch of the coop...

Missing heads sounds like a weasel, mink, or raccoon attack.

I use the little dollar ones for school kids from WalMart. They are actually pretty sharp, and also good for trimming caked-on poo around fuzzy butts.

A few years ago when I got my first chickens, I decided to clip one wing on all of my pullets who kept jumping my 4 foot chainlink fence, my 5 foot barn fence, ad all other fences. It was a waste of time. My hens could fly straight up in the air to the top of my coop run without a problem...

I like to put mine in the oven at 220 degrees for 5-10 minutes. They will shatter much easier without the membrane holding them together. They cool instantly, and I put them into a freezer bag and crunch them with a jar to the same size you do, then store them in the freezer bag and add to it...

Delisha, I found a little info on aflatoxin poisoning and aspergillosis in the msucares site. Some sites say to treat with activated charcoal, but other sites say there is no treatment, except to give high protein, high fat diet, with extra vitamins and probiotics. Recovery takes up to 3...

I grew up eating squirrel, turtle, pheasant, but the worst thing was groundhog (woodchuck to you northerner.). Greasy and gamey. Squirrel meat is actually very tasty (like chicken, LOL) but I drew the line when it came to cracking the skulls to eat the brains. Sorry to hear about your chickens...

I have lately using Southern States 20% Rocking Rooster pellets and it has a little animal protein in it too. I have all ages,, but no tiny chicks right now, and everyone loves it. It is the same as an all flock raiser.

So sorry that happened. Are you sure that it is gone? I had a polish hen who is always running into everyone and getting lost, and she was pecked in the eye. It was swollen for a couple of days while I applied AB ointment to it, and about 3 days later the eye became visible again. It didn't...
