John Jensen is in Oregon but he has some very nice Rhode Island Reds. I don't want to post his number on open forum but you can PM me for it. He doesn't do electronic communication.

Hey guys, I'm posting because one of my non-Internet savvy friends is being forced by poor health to get rid of his flock of Buff Leghorns. He's been working with them a couple decades and is hoping people will want to continue his work, and asked me to help him find homes for them. The birds...

Huh, must be new when I taught a class for the county about four years ago it was not on the books then, there's a couple people that have lots in the city limits, including right in the middle of old town...I'm actually right outside the rapidly expanding city limits thankfully. Thanks for the...

It's a hold over that goes all the way back to the Jungle Fowl, which would roost for protection. (Fun fact, the term "rooster" was not meant to define a male chicken, but rather an unproductive fowl that roosted all the time and did not lay/make nests). The domestic fowl of today do not need to...

Hi fellow Battle Ground resident. Unless you have a HOA that says differently The City of Battle Ground does not have any regulations on poultry, including male chickens.

Believe what you wish but science isn't on your side. With the way the vaccine works all it does is let your birds get sick but not show it, pass it to others, and allow the virus to become resistant and stronger for future generations. Was that a poultry vet that recommended that, doubtful...

Excellent post. The Marek's vaccine does NOT prevent them from contracting it, only from showing symptoms (this is true of most poultry vaccines, they don't work like human or dog vaccines). It is also totally ineffective to vaccinate them any time after 24 hours of hatching. Vaccinating birds...

Your instincts are good, Bantams can be excellent utility birds especially in suburban back yards (Plus you might even make truths out of mislabeled coops everywhere, 6-8 hens in a 4'x4' coop? LOL not with anything real sized.) No idea why people dismiss them out of hand, it's rather silly...

Longevity isn't something a hatchery concerns themselves with, since much like the commercial egg laying farms they replace their stock at 18 months (first adult molt) because it's more cost effective. That's why they stop laying so quick and start so early too, because anything past that time...

Glad it was helpful. Blue is a fun color to breed too, although easy to mess up if one gets too wrapped up in color. Over the years have bred it in every breed that is recognized. The Standard/Large Fowl thing is a source of confusion I never thought about! The really trippy thing is if you...

You're far too worried about breeding related birds together. The hatch defects you mentioned from that other line were more likely to be caused by temperature or humidity issues during incubation. You're more likely to get unknown defects from a total outcross. For others that might not...

You're assuming a pea comb would be present somehow. She was likely just correcting that a Wyandotte has a Rose Comb, not a pea comb. It isn't unusual for Wyandottes (even in some show lines, let alone hatchery stuff) to occasionally be heterozygous Rose Comb, and eventually two recessive single...

Battle Ground does not have any ordinances about chickens currently. If you live in a neighborhood that has some sort of CCA or something that would be the legal hurdle. There was a small group that was going to try and change that due to some irresponsible poultry keepers in town though.

There are Buff birds other than Orpingtons. Buff Leghorns are excellent layers, don't tend toward broodiness either.

Hey guys and gals, don't post here much anymore but am wondering if there is anyone that would be interested in working on a Buff Leghorn or Bantam Langshan project. The Buff Leghorns are three years in and despite large improvements are probably still a year or two away from champion row. The...

Try the sentence immediately before the cherry picked quotes where it says it had no significant effect. Or reading the entire study and the negligible affects. Once again I'm reminded why I avoid this place. Just started reading again because I got some PM's, back to reality.

To be clear wasn't saying it was totally ineffective against mites (although I find other things more effective), those are opinions and vary by person, but there are actual university studies and hard facts that show it's useless as a wormer. That's all.

This is wrong, sorry. DE has zero effect as a wormer. See study at this link. http://www.absorbentproductsltd.com/Red-Lake-Diatomaceous-Earth-Free-Range-Organic-Laying-Hens-Study.pdf

I breed Langshans and will have some very nice birds that will be available in the near future. Send me a PM, I do not have the Whites, but do breed both Black and Blue.

@Frindizzle just send me a PM and I can give you Michele's info. She has amazing Favorelles, and is in Washougal, but visits Battle Ground often. An alternative would be attending the PNPA Double show Oct 17-18th at the Clark County Event Center in Ridgefield, WA
