Yes, I think the mice come out at night. My friend told me she observed her chickens chasing and catching mice, so closing it will curb the problem. But I need to stop the flinging, food all over the floor is food for mice at night. I like the steeper pipe in the picture posted a few pages back...
So they have to get their heads in deeper, and can't fling food this way? I could try that and still close the same lid at night. Do you think the mice get at the food while the chickens are up and about? If not, I could still leave the lid open all day, while I am at work and close it at night...
Sorry I have been MIA, I took care of my terminally ill father for the past month. Sadly he passed away last Saturday.
I got back home today (the girls were excited to see my daughter - ha!) and checked out the coop. My neighbors and friends took care of my pets while I was gone, they did...
2 days ago I got home and saw lots of food all over the floor of the coop. So much that I left the feeder lid closed and they still have plenty to eat. This defeats the purpose of the feeder lid as rodents can eat the food as well. Having the food all over the floor of the coop has me worried...
I don't know how to upload videos to this site, maybe you could just watch it here:

Cool solar panel lighting system, way beyond me, but exactly what I would wish to achieve at some point.
I finally had some time to work a bit on the coop, added the magnets to keep rodents from accessing the feed at night. I also cut a new stopper, one of the chickens would fling food about...
I saw you were discussing water systems, so I thought I'd show you mine:
A recycled cooler without its styrofoam hangs on the side of the coop.
I bought this at a pet shop, in the bird section.
The girls like it!
You wont have to Kung Fu my head!
I had some time this week and my neighbor pitched in too - and here are the results:
1. I removed the feeder and just left the bend open. I now know that they don't eat all at once, and they are nice girls that take turns, so there is no need for a multi hole...
I like the "J" design, I think I am going to take off the trough and see if this "J" works better for my girls. I can also think of a type of a lid to put on this "J" to keep out the mice at night, I'll just connect a stick to a lid and keep it inside the coop, accessible from the outside...
No I didn't get the chance to fix up the coop on Friday , I get home from work after 4 pm and with Autumn and DST it gets dark so early the girls are already starting to stretch their necks upward planing to retire for the night. I wouldn't bother them when they want to sleep. I just check in...
