    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I weighed my biggest CX roo a little bit ago. I was just using a bathroom scale (not even digital) so I just got a good idea. It weighed somewhere around 6 or 7 pounds. ...he is liable to be a guest for 4th of July.

That's what I did with mine. They love picking and scratching around at it. They also get some grit from it to help their digestion. Cute chicks BCM!

If I had not already had a cocci outbreak, I would not bother using the medicated feed.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

No, I did ferment it. But yes, one bag. I try to time it so they are outside on the ground while they are still eating that bag. That way they are getting the protection from the medication while they are on the ground POSSIBLY being exposed to the cocci building up immunity to it. Also putting...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

FF will definitely help keep your birds healthy. Good chance medicated feed wouldn't even be needed. But everybody has to make that decision for their self. I have had a cocci outbreak on my place so hatchery chicks that start out in the brooder I have fed one bag of medicated feed. After the...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Since it will only be me I will be dressing mine a few at a time. I wish I had a plucker. I believe I will check into making one. I sure don't want to pay the big price that most of them are! There are so many elderly folks that use to live around here that are gone now. I hate that. I'm sure...

@Turk... Got any pics of your Dark Cornish? I haven't had any of those yet but they have been on my list. My CX are really putting of the weight lately. They are 14 weeks old.

@Turk... that is really cool that you live close to your grandma's friends. I'm sure her friends really like it too. I wish I had somebody close by to do some bartering with on raw goat milk, cheese, butter and garden produce - and goat meat! Yum!!!

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

@tniron... I don't know. I'm not sure if anybody knows for sure. I don't think it would keep medicated started from still working but I guess it depends on the form of the medication used in the feed. In other words, I don't know. LOL But I do know that ff will help a lot to keep your birds...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I've got about 6 older roosters and 12 CX that will end up on the plate. My CX have really grown in the past two weeks. They are all getting heavy but they are still fine mobility-wise. The CX have been a joy to raise. I dread killing them. The older roosters not so much.

Turk... How long are you going to feed your birds like that?

It can be good to get off topic! :) That sounds similar to how the Bresse chickens are finished. No doubt the older generations had a lot of wisdom.

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Hi deb. I've never made ff for geese or turkeys (but would if I had them). But whatever you would normally feed geese and turkeys is what would be suitable to ferment for them. Good luck. :)

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

@Latestarter... My birds are just rude. lol I have to set the feed pans up on top of the 4' pen to fill them then I have to fake them out as I toss the pan in their pen. It's not perdy. lol When they were smaller I've had them climbing up my back and flying up trying to reach the pan I'm trying...

Welcome, glad you found FF! :) Be sure to only use cool to luke warm water when you refresh you feed. Boiling water will kill your ferment after it has started. Good luck!

Sounds like you got hold of some wild CX like I did. Mine are about 12 weeks old and still running and flying most places they go. But they can't get quite as far off the ground now... kinda like me. LOL
