    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I remember the first time a friend of mine that almost detests animals came into my chicken shed to see them when I first got them. She said, "Why doesn't it stink in here?" I just replied that if you raise them in a healthy manner there shouldn't be any stink... :)

Personally, I don't recommend giving scobys from Kombucha since it is made on tea. Because of the caffeine (or caffeine-like substance in addition to other issues) I feel like it's likely not a good fit for livestock.

I find that if the trough is deep enough, they don't walk in it and they don't dump it out all over the place. I started using pyrex bread pans and just happened to see this flower box at Lowes that I can fit 2 in that have the handles on them. (Handles overlap in the center). I can just...

I'm pretty sure it's because you lacto-ferment yours. The way you ferment, your liquid is very acid (high lactic acid content in the liquid...low ph). If you have any tiny abrasions or scratches it will burn.

Oh..... so you're talking about SOAKING FEED rather than FERMENTING FEED. (I didn't realize that!) In that case it also doesn't matter. Soaking feed is a GREAT way to break down the phytic acid and other anti-nutrients to make it more digestible. A wonderfully healthy practice! What...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

That is a good point. If you're talking about meat birds it doesn't really matter as the life is so short. When I express concern over fermenting with yeast rather than LABs, it is only for chickens that are layers that are kept long-term. Do realize, however, that the studies that were...

Another variable is the LEVEL OF ALCOHOL in the feed. Some may have a lower/higher level than others and that will affect how quickly damage would be done as well.

I don't have an answer for that. In a small animal like a chicken it wouldn't take long for liver damage to occur from regular, continued alcohol consumption. I'd like to do a necropsy or 2 on some of these birds to see the condition of their livers.... ETA: I don't know that anyone has...

You might want to take a look at the series that explains the 2 different kinds of fermentation. If you're fermenting for chicken feed it shouldn't be producing alcohol... Check out the articles here - it will make things a little more clear. Here's another short explanation: (Hope that's...

Alcohol is made by yeasts - generally they need air to produce. Lactic fermentation is anaerobic. Thus keeping a layer of water above the feed will help to deter the growth of unwanted yeasts and molds.

The mother culture in ACV isn't a lactic acid bacteria. It is Acetobacter aceti which produces acetic acid (vinegar). That kind of bacteria FEEDS ON ALCOHOL and produces acetic acid (vinegar). So...hopefully you aren't producing alcohol as it is processed through the liver rather than the...

You might try firefox and see if it works. Strangely enough, chrome is a google product and so is blogspot so you'd think they would work together!

I definitely wouldn't use yeast when fermenting feed. Yeast consumes sugars and produces alcohol. When I ferment I use Lacto-fermenting: Lactic Acid Bacteria consuming those carbs and producing lactic acid. Take a look at these articles on fermenting feed. The series explains the different...
