Hi, I’m not a fan of deep litter simply because the rising ammonia can cause upper respiratory issues. I’ve used sand in one of my coops with some success, but it must be coarse or fat sand because fine sand will also cause upper respiratory issues.

Hello Annie, yes it’s been awhile. This year has played havoc with my birds. We’ve had an extra moult due to the long dry spell and high temps. At the grand old age of 7-5 Mandy will be likely to be less reliable or predictable in her laying, this is to be expected. Calcivet liquid added to the...

Hiya, yes the fires are very close to us. Spent 10 days and night at the animal evacuation centre caring for evacuees birds, ducks, geese and cats. The choppers are still overhead and landing on our boundary as the fire has been quitened by the rain but is not out.

There are several causes for chicks to quit and die before hatch. As you’ve said , they include genetics, health and diet of parent stock, but fluctuations in humidity or incubator being opened after lockdown will have the same outcome. What brand incubator are you using? Some have cold spots...

I am reminded daily of our dear old duchess as she is buried up near the breeding pens. We are still waiting compensation for the loss of stock, but I fear it may end up in court. We are still unable to put animals on that acreage. :( We had one good sunny day and now it’s snowing all around us.

Sounds like you are experiencing the old ‘ chicken math ‘ dilemma. I’ve just set a mixed lot of SLW, BLRW, silkie, Orpington and coronation. :jumpy

I’m not familiar with this incubator but I believe some have hot spots. Last one hatched this morning so that’s 100% hatch rate. Im filling it again tomorrow.
