Definitely segregate them! My older hens did their best to try and murder the new ones last spring. Do some reading about introducing new ones to the flock. They young ones need to be I think at least 4-5 months to hold their own. Good luck! Sorry for your losses.

Definitely start small! They lay better if they have plenty of room. I also part-time free range.

My first winter too. I have run a cord out for a heated dog bowl in the run. We wrapped the run in clear tarp securely so they don't get wind and the run is dry and they have been fine. It does get good sun during the day. I open the run everyday to let them peek or come out and free range...

Remember if you're starting chicks this time of year- you'll have to heat the coop or keep them inside. Then you should slowly harden them off like you would plants.

But I'm not doing that till December unless a cold snap happens, you want them to "harden off" and get used to the colder...

Both McMurry's and My Pet Chicken will mail them. I also have heard of some farms selling them, but I think a hatchery might be safer.

I have a Band of Brothers, 6 EE Roos. They were hatched in the classroom and I foolishly said I would take them. I'm in a semi-urban setting, not supposed to have roosters.Going to The MSPCA's Nevin's farm soon if I can't find a home. We will try and keep one with a no- crow collar. They are a...
