I have never had a hen sleep in the nesting box until this year. A few of mine have been doing this lately. It started when they were molting. Maybe they are cranky during molt and dont want to roost with other hens...:idunno I would just go out after dark and push them out of the nesting...

Im not interested in taking your rooster off your hands but you may have better luck if you post your general location. I would love to have a rooster but my neighbors are too close and I don't want anyone complaining about my chickens. Good luck finding a home.

I dont know where you are but twin cedar farm in Acushnet ma has gorgeous dark mahogany RI reds. They have a website and are sometimes on this page. I have a FCBM, cream legbar from them gorgeous. Never really wanted RI reds until I saw theirs. May be a few myself this spring. Hope this helps

Update....in case its helpful to anyone else. I went with the 8' cattle panels instead of 16' and just built a knee wall to accomodate the length on my addition to my coop..if that makes sense. We ended up just lying them flat in the tacoma with bungees and it was fine.
