    Mealworm farming

I just dumped the dregs of an old mealworm farm. Old like I haven't looked at it for maybe 2-3 years. I was amazed to find a single live beetle and a few live larvae in a tray with some cornmeal.

Maybe @HenOnAJuneBug read studies far enough to know what the plastic chemicals got changed too? What I read was that gut bacteria drastically changed the chemicals.

I didn't read all the studies linked here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/mealworm-farming.492636/page-892#post-19269173 ...but wonder if the worms and their feces were tested for chemical remains.

    Mealworm farming

Both, I would think. Do a test/experiment? Give carrots to one bin and nothing to another, use humidity in both.

    Mealworm farming

Yep, they crawled deep into the sponge. Put it in a cup too slick and tall to crawl up into for humidity. As far as them 'drinking' water not sure, anything in your research on 'styrofoam as food' that addressed that?

That was tickling around in the back of my brain. Will be really interested to hear how it works out long term for you.

    Mealworm farming

Hmmm wonders how that will affect the mealworms long term..... ....and what it means for the critters that eat those mealworms?

It never ceases to amaze me that chickens don't hold 'food' with their feet to assist in tearing it apart. SMH.

    Mealworm farming

I put a small piece of sponge in a bottle cap in the bin once, the larvae crawled all inside the sponge. Didn't do that again.....I found that pieces of carrots the best in summer and pieces of apples in winter worked best for moisture.

I think optimal range is about 80-85...but 75 and slow to grow is better than 95 and dead.
