Sorry I have been missing-in-action, lately. Life tends to distract me from my computer. No worries, though...all is well with me and mine. The Ladies & The Girls are thriving, and now both of our French Black Marans (Bootsy & Barbarella) have begun laying their lovely brown eggs! WooHoo...

This is Barbarella... ...and this is her 1st egg (the freckled one).

So much to catch up on...in due time. For now, the forecast has us getting into the low-30's at night. What are some good ways to winterize my coop? This is our 1st winter with The Ladies & The Girls.

Thank you. Bootsy, and her younger sister Barbarella, are big gals. Both were as big as my hens when we got them a couple of months ago...and they're still growing. Looking forward to seeing just how big Bootsy's (and, eventually, Barbarella's) eggs will get once they really get going.

Penny Peeper (Blue Splash Marans/Amauracana mix) is approximately 16wks old now. Looking back at pictures of when we got her, at 8wks old, there were no signs of misalignment. Could be an injury, or a birth defect that will get more prominent as she gets older. As of right now, I have not...

Speaking of over-bites/under-bites/etc...One of our Blue Splash Marans/Amauracana mix pullets has a misaligned beak. The top part of her beak and the bottom part of her beak don't meet properly...It doesn't appear to bother her at all, and she eats and drinks fine. She's still fairly young, so...

Question for Austin Area Peeps: Do you use a professional pest control service? I am researching pest control for ants/spiders/roaches in and around our home, but I am concerned about the treatment being safe for our dog, cat & 9 chickens. Any recommendations? We can't not treat our pest...
