Woah! I am waaaaaaay too far behind to try to catch up. Hope everyone is doing well. We're doing great, here...and Barbarella, one of our French Black Marans, has gone broody on us. I nudge her out of the nesting box/coop daily and she mingles just fine with the rest of the flock, but then...

Sorry I have been missing-in-action, lately. Life tends to distract me from my computer. No worries, though...all is well with me and mine. The Ladies & The Girls are thriving, and now both of our French Black Marans (Bootsy & Barbarella) have begun laying their lovely brown eggs! WooHoo...

So much to catch up on...in due time. For now, the forecast has us getting into the low-30's at night. What are some good ways to winterize my coop? This is our 1st winter with The Ladies & The Girls.

Thank you. Bootsy, and her younger sister Barbarella, are big gals. Both were as big as my hens when we got them a couple of months ago...and they're still growing. Looking forward to seeing just how big Bootsy's (and, eventually, Barbarella's) eggs will get once they really get going.

Bootsy (the one on the left) squatted for me this afternoon. Looking forward to getting lovely dark brown eggs from her soon. WooHoo!

Update: Our Ladies - The 3 Easter Eggers & 1 White Leghorn (the remaining 4 from our original 5) are all a little over 10 months old & doing fantastically. Our Young Girls - The 3 Blue Splash Marans/Amauracana mix are approximately 4 months old & doing fantastically. Our Older Girls - The 2...

Penny Peeper (Blue Splash Marans/Amauracana mix) is approximately 16wks old now. Looking back at pictures of when we got her, at 8wks old, there were no signs of misalignment. Could be an injury, or a birth defect that will get more prominent as she gets older. As of right now, I have not...

Speaking of over-bites/under-bites/etc...One of our Blue Splash Marans/Amauracana mix pullets has a misaligned beak. The top part of her beak and the bottom part of her beak don't meet properly...It doesn't appear to bother her at all, and she eats and drinks fine. She's still fairly young, so...

We've tried all sorts of stuff. I think the bugs are winning...time for some professional help.

Question for Austin Area Peeps: Do you use a professional pest control service? I am researching pest control for ants/spiders/roaches in and around our home, but I am concerned about the treatment being safe for our dog, cat & 9 chickens. Any recommendations? We can't not treat our pest...
