Yeah, my birds live on a different property so it takes a toll having to go take care of them! That's why I am trying to decrease my numbers. Plus, it gives me the space I need and want to grow out some of my chicks !
If anyone is interested, I have this lovely guy for sale! Can ship, VT NPIP-16. $10 plus shipping. He is good with the girls, and very respectful of people! Just trying to slim down the flock.
These are my adult hens for comparison. I would still say cockerel, because it is only 10 weeks old and showing that much comb! It doesn't seem to have the exact feathering of a male, but that may come in soon.
Not neck - saddle feathers on the back. They will come in more pointy in a male.
See the long, tapering feathers near the tail?
Here are two Bantam Orp chicks at roughly the same age as yours, maybe a bit younger. Female in front, male in back.
I have hens that showcase that behavior, so I wouldn't say that it was indicative of gender. Determining sex on this breed is pretty straightforward.. Especially for me since my other two breeds are Silkies and Ameraucanas!
Jeremy - You have mauve; do you have any pictures of the chicks? I hatched Silkie x bantam Orp chicks and I have a chocolate cuckoo boy, chocolate hen, and blue/splash partridge Silkies. I think I ended up with three mauve, one blue, one solid chocolate and one chocolate cuckoo :)
Blue...
It was taken a few days ago. I don't really mind because I would just have to deal with it again next year. That's why this guy (and the two girls) are the only single comb birds I have!
Looked back and it was Pueblo CO. Not sure what the elevation is there! I have heard the same thing about altitude and hatching... Must be frustrating!!
Mine were ridiculously broody last year (as pullets). I never let them set any eggs, but they should be able to do the same number as Silkies or more. My Silkie successfully hatched and raised 3 LF eggs, but I would imagine that they could handle a few more.
Here is a guy if anyone is interested (about 28 weeks old?). I have his sister and mother, so really don't want to inbreed so closely He is about the same size as my Silkie cockerels.
