If a person is to 'preserve' or 'save' a breed how else could they begin but with what limited stock there is? If I was to take this advice I wouldn't be working with a bird I really like so far. I have gone the way of trying to get birds from different and distant sources and culled to those...
I have heard this before. Mr Walt, do you mean that Asils from a hatchery are not 'real' like AmerIcaunas from hatcheries are not 'real'? Would you mind taking a minute to clarify the distinction? I personally have no desire to keep them but I am coming to respect and admire them more since...
It was suggested that I keep them separated however I am considering using a cock Asil over my Orloff hens to create black Orloffs. I figured it could help the type of what I have as well. I just worry about the temperament change. Orloffs are known to be docile and Asil not.
I would like to butt in with a request for help and a question. Firstly, does anyone have the link to a page covering Asil/Aseels? Second, regarding same breed; Is the pelvic spread part of a contribution to why a bird, like the Aseel/Asil, lays so few eggs?
Erek told me about the Polish himself. I may have misunderstood him regarding the Hamburgs. I don't believe he showed them at the Congress but its totally possibly I made a mistake when we were talking. Yellowhouse will know sooner than I since I won't see him till the 17th of the month...
No, I don't think he has them any more. No Polish either, but he could tell you a few people who do. I see him again on the 17 so I can ask. And I agree fwiw. Erik Nelsen is a quiet symphony of poultry knowledge.
Up here in the frigid north light is definitely in short supply and if you are cooping your birds on the really bad days, which can be for lengths of time, then sunshine is in short supply as well. I leave the light on in there but maybe changing the bulb will get egg production up, temps up...
Really? Do you have some alarm that sounds when an egg lands? My eggs out in the barn and cottage are cold! I have no idea how long they are cold either so I don't incubate them.
Standard Poultry Illustrated has me laughing! I can just see thong swimsuits on the birds now with their retouched photos and waxed and plucked regions!
Just call it the judgemental thread already and cull those folks who don't want to hear the details before they post.
I have heard a number of folks say they have an incubator and a hatcher. The one reason given so far was for cleanliness. I am not sure I understand this very well.
Does anyone have a good picture of a Golden penciled Hamburg? They remind me of Campines. (non professional eye here) I am used to seeing the silver spangled. But I would love to find some silver or gold penciled Hamburg LF.
It takes one to know one. And if not, we are loud enough across the global plain to make it easy to know us.
Miss Karen it was only this year that a new BYCer from my state showed up with birds that Mr Bob hadn't known about; beautiful RIR. He inherited his, is now showing them, and they...
My son ask me to teach him/show him, said it was time he should learn. I was shocked but agreed. He managed alright and ate the bird in soup. I think it helped that it was a rooster that would chase any of us if we came out of the house. Now, when he brought home a turkey poult and cared for...
I know this sounds odd but for us initially the two issues were 1) having everyone understand that we raise them with care, not love-- you are what you eat (you love your pets and don't eat those), and 2) the visual difference of a bird that isn't all white breast. Even still I find myself...
Mr Chris I am not sure how lake snow is different than ours here. Freezing snow and sleet and winds and all that. I am similiar to Arielle in this regard. Ice storms and all that. I would feel like a bad keeper if I let a bird freeze.
I like the tight hard feathering and believe that has a...
JAMAN The barrels don't appear to close in anyway so I assume that the round pen is what keeps them out for the most part. I question how this would work here, with snow etc.
Thank you for this image. This helps with the directions Saladin gave. I never would have thought of grazing several cock/erels this way. There must be a conditioning phase for this as well.
I went to bed thinking of 30" tall birds who could give me 'the look'.... admiration goes along...
