My BLRW are super broody and great mothers. They have all hatched clutches twice this year and they sit and raise "their" chicks together as a family unit.

I have been extremely happy with my Binsea incubators. My personal opinion is my eggs are valuable to my breeding program so I am not going to waste my time or eggs using incubators that need constant adjusting and attention. To me, it is just as important to invest in a good quality incubator...

Do you normally only keep two pullets back for breeding the following season? I try and keep 5 just incase anything happens between now and then, and then choose the best 3 right before breeding pens are set up. I like how you kept the second choice pullet for improving the hackles and tail...

The only change in the Wyandotte that I can see from the 1909 SOP to the current standard is the tail angles have come down 10 degrees. If you have an older breed the SOP may still apply today.

Yes they need to be cleaned up. Columbian Wyandottes showing excess of color are defects which are not countenanced in exhibition poultry but are useful in breeding to strengthen the black in the hackle, saddle and tail in strains that are weak in that respect. A white under-color in the back...

I really love the buffs and tried to get a start from Urch but it never panned out. I hadn't noticed Mr. Anderson's birds in the yearbook, I am halfway through reading it. I remember you posted a picture of a buff cockerel on here awhile back from a show.

The standard Wyandotte has many approved varieties that badly need help and people willing to take them on. I am working on a few of the old varieties but we need many more people to do this. This breed is my passion, I just adore them. I have one person I am working with on one variety but...

Yard full o' Rocks I found some information that may be of use for you. This is in regard the hackle feathers in the cock bird (Columbian). It is from my 1919 APA Wyandotte Standard and Breed Book. It says, " The females picked to produce strong black stripes in males are those with sound...

The birds that I am growing out this year have 20 acres to range on all day, they are only cooped overnight. My breeder birds also range but in large yards built just for them. We have raised all kinds of livestock and I have never been a fan of penning any of them. We are lucky to have...

Speaking of the Columbian pattern related to under color. Is this something we can cull for at hatching? I have chicks that vary from almost all white to a dark grey all over. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. (I am referring to standard Wyandottes)

Karen, Goats milk is much easier to digest than cows milk. I feed fresh raw goats milk to my chickens everyday over the top of their fermented feed when I scoop it out into large feed bowls. I have been feeding it to all of my stock that I am growing out. They LOVE it and they look awesome.

By Dr. Chris McDaniel, Associate Professor, Poultry Science Department, Mississippi State University A hen will have maximum fertility for only about 3 to 4 days after one mating. For this reason, the male-to-female ratio in a flock must be enough to ensure mating of every hen every 3 days or so.
