I'm not sure what's normal behavior, but what I call aggression others may describe as their roo wanting to sit on their shoulder. When he flies at me, I'm not gonna be still. Mostly they start trying to bite when I pick them up post-hormones. So I gently lift them from behind and they're fine...

Here's my 4mo pullet from the latest hatch, Étoile. I think her profile is the best among my hatchlings.

I suspected the blues were different because their crests are less luxurious and they are much larger birds, dwarfing the others. They are also more agressive toward their flock mates. That informed my decision to keep them out of my breeding program going forward.

Where can I learn more? I've read everything I've found and know some of the old line key breeders' names, but it still feels very much out of reach. I'm just over here breeding my personal flock to the 1800s drawings and whatever shows up in The Livestock Conservancy's education videos. I was...

My best layer is probably my least broody: Large Marge

Eh I doubt any of my hens will go broody. I have an incubator and may try out Artemisia as the mama for my hatchlings. But I have a B I'm new at this and my pullets show very little signs of going broody. I'm prepared to be my hatchlings' chicken mama. Contact Jeanette Beranger at the...

And here is why you have to decide between cockerels for your flock

Here's Cati the Daddy, the cockerel keeper. He's the first to give up his grub to the pullets and is cool at all times, plus quite a big dude.

Awww, cutie! You can certainly have one of my roos at this point. Ha! I have a soft heart for Artemisa, who echolocates to find me because she can barely see through her crest and prefers to be held rather than free range. She might be my broody mama when the time comes. My Crèvecœurs rarely lay...

Gorgeous babies! I was worried that this breed lays 7-9 mos but mine started at 5-6 mos. Yours are right one time, but there isn't as much information on the breed, so worrying seems to be a normal thing for me, even though they are very robust so far. I supplement their layer feed with fresh...

I can imagine importing livestock is a bit difficult. I wonder what the process is. A couple of Crèvecœur people provide pullets and cockerels a generation out from Greenfire for hobbyists like ourselves. The problem with sexing chicks seems ridiculous when you consider this is a breed we are...

Yes, gentle birds, and very bonded, in my experience. Love mine! They enjoy lots of attention and like to be carried and held, too. It's surprising they don't startle when they can't see what's happening most of the time.

My Crèvecœur flock, including one Blue, have sparked my interest in breeding and raising pullets and cockerels to encourage the breed in my area, where we have several Silkie breeders. Everyone who comes to our little farm wants this breed, so I am hopeful the grassroots effort will keep it...

Cati the Daddy is our top cockerel at present and he is so sweet if not a bit overly bonded. He comes to fetch me when I stray too far from the flock and loves to be picked up. Here he is strutting his stuff. (I'm addicted to making Crèvecœur music videos, sorry not sorry.)
