    ALABAMA!!

Welcome. We're neighbors. I'm in Somerville, about 20 minutes east of you in Morgan County. Enjoy your birds and BYC

    ALABAMA!!

I've just caught up on the forum after my week or so of forgeting to jump over to the AL thread. I'm glad to hear that everyone seems to have weathered the storms fairly well. Its been a busy week for me. I had 10 ducklings hatch about 9 days ago. My 3.5 month old muscovy are starting to...

    ALABAMA!!

Here are my newest additions. 10 Muscovy ducklings + 1 that is about a week older who was a single hatching and mom decided to abandon it. I also have chicks hatching today. JG and JG/BO crosses!!!! I'm up to 29 ducks now and well, I don't know how many chicks are hatching under my broody.

Quote: We are renting. We live way outside of the town limits. Its a 20 minute drive to Somerville proper for us, takes just as long to get to south Huntsville. We are much closer to Lacey's Spring. Thats where the feed store I go to is, its 7 miles away.

    ALABAMA!!

Hi Illory. I'm new to AL myself. We moved up here in June. We live south of Huntsville, about 30 minutes from downtown. I'm in Somerville, Morgan County. I love it here. Hubby is wishing we lived north of town. There is just not alot in south Huntsville. We are about 20 miles from...

    ALABAMA!!

I agree to a point but it is also about biosecurity. I know that if I were raising a large number of birds for resale (eggs, chicks, meat, whatever) I wouldn't want anyone just walking around. You never know what they may have on their shoes etc that is not a problem in your flock.

    ALABAMA!!

Luckily, they aren't this bad here. :) Yes, I know they can be. Since we rent, I am not going to go to the expense of putting electric fence around 5 acres. I'm hoping the "official" warning that the owner got will do the trick. I may fence off part of the pasture and put them back out...

    ALABAMA!!

Most of the people that we've met have been very gracious. We've only been here since June and there do seem to be some folks that are a bit standoffish but I think it is more of a cocnern of how we may think of things or do things. Our local feed store's elderly owner frequently askes me if I...

    ALABAMA!!

Thanks tomtomom. Most of the folks here are from a few different families. I'm assuming that nobody wanted to be a bad neighbor but since we will not be living here forever, I'll take the brunt. I have heard that the owners of the dogs have lost several of their dogs to being shot by others...

    ALABAMA!!

Hi all. Bad day or so here. Yesterday morning a neighbor's dog came onto the property and killed one of my JG roos (the good one who always stayed with the ladies when they were out ranging) and one of my BO hens (who was just considering going broody). I saw the dog coming out of the woods...

Exactly. You want everything ready with their heat lamp on to temp and their water at room temp BEFORE they arrive.

Quote: You can check craigslist too. I found some nice pullets after we moved up here. It took some looking (saw some real horror shows) but the people I got mine from obviously took good care of them and were moving so had to sell. I also put an ad on craigslist asking to buy chicks. Someone...

Quote: I am looking forward to meeting some BYCers in AL. I just figured I'd be honest with myself and admit that I will buy something.

    ALABAMA!!

This is the easiest way to monitor egg output or know who is having a problem. Before moving to AL, I had 5 hens, a buff orpington, brown leghorn, easter egger, barred rock, and silkie. They laid (in same order) light brown, white, green, brown, and off white (smaller too). It was so much...

    ALABAMA!!

Thanks for posting the link bama1. I'm going to go. I wonder if there will be any dorkings for sale there. I'd love to get my hands on some.

    ALABAMA!!

We also have a creek in a wooded area. Its a little bit of a hike from the coop, 200-300' or so from their run (I'm terrible about guessing measurements). Its mostly open until the woods and I've put up some shelters. As a note, most ducks and geese can do fine with just a kiddie pool...

    ALABAMA!!

I'm butting in but you HAVE to get into waterfowl. I was not so fond of geese but LOVE my ducks. Frankly, if I had to choose between ducks and chickens, I'd pick ducks any day. Chickens, are well, kind of dumb. At least mine are. The ducks are watchful but I have Muscovy so they are quiet...

    ALABAMA!!

My ducks are LOVING this weather. They're outside all day. I'm a little concerned that they'll find the creek on the edge of the property and get swept away since it's about 2' above it's normal level. I am looking forward to snow tomorrow though.
